John SUTCLIFFE prisoner 1835 Wakefield
« on: Monday 10 July 17 20:30 BST (UK) »
Hi  my great great great great Grandfather was  John Sutcliffe  who went to prison in October  1835.I want to find out which prison he went to.His trial was in Leeds but there is a burial record in Birstall with the residency being Wakefield  in 1836.I'm wondering if  he could have died in  prison and his family bury him in Birstall  where his wife is buried and he was in Wakefield  prison at the time.Any suggestions on proving my theory ??

I can find a John Sutcliffe aged 60 being sent down for 12 months for Fraud at York Assizes in 1835.

I can also find a burial on 2 April 1836 in Birstall for a 60 year old John Sutcliffe, a Cotton Weaver from Wakefield.

Whether or not either of these are yours I don't know.

It's possible that the prison records might not be available on line. Quite often all you get are the trials in the Quarter Sessions.

I presume you cannot find him in the Censuses.

Cannot find a match in the census and he lived in Birstall  which is why I thought  the 1836 death could be him.So that would  also explain why  there is no census record.
