There are half a dozen death certs for 1921 but unsure which is his as haven't located a death index I only have a date. The one that appears to be him doesn't have parents names ,it just says Sydney instead.

The NSW BDM Index has 4 entries for a William WALSH death in 1912. The one with no parents mentioned says "55 years Sydney" which usually indicates aged 55, died at Sydney - so unlikely to be yours. One is at Broken Hill and the other at Gundagai, so also not yours. The remaining death at Redfern (which seems quite likely given the Hotel was at the Haymarket) has parents Matthew and Margaret (3721/1912). I think if you can, you should order a copy of this death cert (transcriptions are just as good and cheaper).

Thanks maddys but the death year on his tombstone & trove death notices was 1921 not 1912 or did u just do a typo? But I will order the blank that says 66 years as the age seems to fit

Sorry, I don't know what I was thinking! Yes you're right, must have typed in the wrong year, my apologies.  :-[

I see now the correct entry, yes 288/1921. Probably worth ordering, though as you say it looks from the index that the informant didn't know many details.

NSW BDM marriage
336 / 1882 NIMMO Kate   m. WALSH William    @  Sydney

What you have is possibly the civil registration of the marriage. It would be incompletely transcribed from the church original. If you can locate the church original it would have the details that were not transcribed to the civil register  eg parents' names etc.

Can you please list all the information on the certificate that you have.

An informative thread started by JM who is a wonderful source of information for all things New South Wales.  She is on holidays at the moment. :)
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=546609.0

The task of reconciling the Church Records for marriages between 1856 and 1895 was never finalised. Some of the Registry's marriage records from these years still have missing information....."

Perhaps the thread may receive more attention on the Australian Board
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,165.0.html

I think this info is also relevant

It was not until 1896 that it became compulsory for the age, birthplace and parentage of marriage parties to be provided for civil registration. The Registry attempted to capture the missing data from church records in the early 1900s, annotating Registry records appropriately, but many such records still have these columns blank. Church records, on the other hand, often record them. Baptisms and burial records do not provide the same scope for extra information, but researchers should always locate any relevant church registers event to ensure information recorded at the time has not been omitted from or incorrectly transcribed to the civil records.

I have a resource which may have the location of archived Sydney Presbyterian parish records.

"..He was listed as a Cab proprietor on a child's birth cert"

Can you please list all the information on this birth certificate. Is it this certificate that gives a birthplace for William?

A William Walsh born about 1855 arrived in Sydney on 27 Aug 1877 on the Samuel Plimsoll ship. I dont have a full sub to Anc Australia to look further. May be a long shot but date wise is possible.
