What does it mean? Merchant Navy

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help tell me what this means?
In the last entry where discharge is written there is a number T45......  ??? (I can't make it out) JUNE 1951 below Auckland. I also would like to know what the pink 13 means?  ??? Also what does DO stand for in rank and profession?

My Great Uncle went missing. He failed to join the Waimana in Auckland. From what I know he was last seen in 1950/1951 in Auckland. I'm trying to find out more about him.

DO means ditto, his rank in that entry being the same as the one above.  Other clerks had entered the actual rank in earlier entries.

I fear that the mysterious marks have the look of notes relating to the administrative system which meant something at the time but whose meaning has long since evaporated.  The first one could be a form ie "[Form] T45M [submitted] date"

Have you explored the NZ newspapers of the time?

Thanks maxD :). It's interesting to know. I never thought ??? about  newspapers but will have a look. I can't believe I didn't think about  looking in Newspapers  ;D.

As far as I am aware form T45M was notification from the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen to the Inland Revenue that the person concerned was no longer a Merchant seaman.
I don't know where you are but have you looked at the ships logbook and crew agreement for the dates in question to see if there are any clues as to why he deserted and any indication where he may have gone too.

Seaweed - always a pleasure to see you come alongside!  Form T45M to IR Jun 1951 now comes into focus.  Excellent advice re log books etc.

Thanks seaweed, interesting stuff. What I have is a letter from the  Ministry of Transport and Aviation saying that he failed to join the Waimana and they had no more information. I also have his discharge book using a reference that I got from the letter. I will definitely look into logbooks etc  :) great advice. The story that I have been told is that my Grandfather was on the same ship and he joined but Cecil did not and he never knew what happened to Cecil.

I appreciate the advice.  :)

Thanks whiteout. I have and saw a couple for Cecil Shaw Alexander in 1949 and 1954. I need to explore that more. It's been on my to do list  ;D. Good advice.
