False registry alert/advert pop-up
« on: Saturday 30 July 05 16:48 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Been off air for a couple of months due to connection probs. All seems OK now. Unfortunately in between logging on and updating anti virus/firewall, I seem to have downloaded adverts for a registry scanner. Every few minutes one of three different popups appears telling me my registry is wrong and I need to do something about it now by going to a web site and downloading some software. ITS DRIVING ME NUTS. Please can someone tell me how to get rid of this
PLEASE

Hi,

I would try some anti-spyware software as a first resort, though some persistant spyware may take special programs to get rid of.

However, try one of the following,
Microsoft anti-spyware (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx)

Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/)

There are others but I have used both these.

If you still get the problems, let us know which site its pointing you at, and anything else on the message. It might then be possible to work out what is behind it all and a better way of dealing with it.

Hi Olias,

This has been happening on my daughter's computer and has to do with the MS Messenger Service.

The pop-ups tell you to visit (among other sites) ms-fix.com, e-regfix.com, swipespy.com and fixregerror.com.

The mere fact that there are so many different sites tells you that it is not real !!

One way to clear it is to turn off the Messenger Service

- Start
- Control Panel
-Add/Remove Programs
- Add/Remove components
- uncheck Windows Messenger

If you Google for e-regfix.com, you will find several forums and sites where this problem is explained !

hi thanks for all the help.
Unfortunatly none of it worked but joy o joy I found an american website that gave instructions using the control panel and administrators tools and it works. Berlin Bob was partly right it was to do with the windows messenger service but you obviously have to go deeper in xp to turn it off

Which site was that, Olias ?

After it went away for a while, the problem is now re-occurring intermittently on my daughter's computer.

The Messenger service is nothing to do with Windows Messenger. Confusing, but true.
The one causing the hassle is used in corporate networks to allow announcements to be sent to users. If you are not on such a network, there's not much point in having it turned on. The service has been around a LONG time, but these spammers latched on to it only a couple of years ago.

Go to:-
Start Menu,
Control Panel
If you see "Performance and Maintenance", select it.
Administrative tools
Services.
In the box that pops up, double-click on the line for "Messenger".
Press the "Stop" button to stop the thing arriving now, then change the "Startup type" to "Disabled" to make sure you don't see them after a reboot.
Press OK to get things remembered, then close the windows you've opened.

Job Done  :)
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
