Andrew Turton, Gravemaker & Witness 21 Sept 1845, who was He?
« on: Tuesday 30 May 17 09:48 BST (UK) »
Hello All

Andrew Turton, was Gravemaker and Witness 21 September 1845 at the Quaker Burial Ground, Selby, who was Andrew Turton, please?

This is an odd funeral, as George Hood being buried is "Not in Membership" of the Quakers.

Andrew Turton, does not seem to appear later in "The Annual Monitor" books of Quaker Obituaries and does not appear to be a Quaker?

EDIT: Death of an Andrew Turton, District Selby, Registered September Quarter 1861, aged 71 (age GRO Index), so survived at least two Census?

So who was Andrew Turton, anything else you can dig up on him and what was his religion please?

 --------

Newspaper searches for Turton and Selby only reveal the following:-

Sheffield Independent, 24 May 1823
On Monday, at Snaith, Mr. John Holliday, of Leeds, bookkeeper, to Mary, second daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Turton, of Selby.

York Herald circa 1830:-

Same at Selby, Mr R. A. West , of Leeds, draper, youngest son of the late Rev. Francis West, to Eliza, second daughter of the Rev. Isaac Turton, of Selby.

Also noticed a "Rev. Isaac Turton" but elsewhere, mentioned in the following:-
a) Stamford Mercury, 29 November 1816
Methodist Auxiliary Missionary Society was held at Grimsby ... in the Methodist Chapel, ... The Sermons preached by the ... and the Rev. Issac Turton, from Hull, ...

b) Yorks. Gazette, 12 January 1828

Leeds Times, 3 June 1848
On Saturday, much respected, aged 87, Mr James Turton, of Selby.

Not much to go on really, no mention of Andrew Turton, who incidentally, despite being the Grave Maker and Witness, couldn't sign his name, so who was he please?

Thank you, Mark

Thank you Goughy

Nothing more now, can be extracted from George Hood's 'Burial Note'.

I had tried the Leeds University Special Collections who hold the Quaker records to find the York Meeting Announcement with the Meeting date for Sarah Hood, Widow of George and also if there are Meeting or other Minutes, regarding George Hood asking to be buried in their Burial Ground at Selby.

I would have thought Quaker Elders, would have formerly decided on George Hood's Non-Quaker, Quaker Burial.

Regarding George Hood's burial, the note was also signed by Jonathan Hutchinson, suggesting he officiated and we've already discussed that he was a Quaker, as George Hood called him my friend in his Will (Proved 1846).

Kind regards, Mark

Reply from Quaker Archives

There are many reasons why someone not in membership might come to be buried in a Quaker burial ground (employment by Friends, adult school attendance, a local ‘character’, a falling out with or non-payment of dues to the local clergyman, historical family connections with Friends, or conversion to Quakerism by one of his children, perhaps). You should certainly try and look at the local (preparative) meeting (PM) minutes, or those of the elders and overseers. For Selby PM, minutes exist from 1698-18715, of the Women’s PM, 1836-1876, and burial notes from 1836-1877. These may contain a reference to your relative, not just about the burial but maybe previous to his death why he was associated with Friends.

Should this fail to reveal more, you might try the records of York Monthly Meeting (one level up, as it were) to which Selby Preparative Meeting belonged.

END of reply.

Jonathan Hutchinson of Selby, was described by George Hood in his Will (Proved 1846) as "my Friend" and the "sole Arbitrator or Umpire". George was also occupying property of William Procter. Both Hutchinson and Procter at Selby were Quakers.

Son, William Hood, Brewer, married Jane Casson (born Thorne), 23 December 1851 and her father Curtis Casson was a Miller. William & Jane Hood (Jane Casson Hood) were recorded as Quakers at death.

Son, James Hood married Sarah Arundel and they were Quakers at death.

Son, John Hood married Sarah Richardson at Sculcoates in 1846 and some Richardsons were known to be Quakers. Although the old book online about the family of Richardsons, does not mention any link to Hood, but has other names, several at Selby.

Incidentally Widow of George, Sarah Hood, did not become a Quaker.
