I made two starts on this photo when it was first posted, and gave up - or so I thought. A few days later I said, “Bugger it, it’s not going to beat me” and started for the third time.
Apparently Portuguese early 20th century army uniforms were first made locally, with the colours varying between manufacturer, from a khaki to a drab grey. In 1917 they began having them manufactured in Britain, with the colour being grey to steel grey and often looking blue-grey. Here are two versions:
