O'Callaghan, Fermoy Co. Cork
« on: Saturday 30 July 05 10:04 BST (UK) »
John O’Callaghan was a mason, based in Fermoy, Co.Cork- possibly in Newmarket St.  Rumour has it that he fought in the Crimean War.  He had at least one son, Peter O’Callaghan, who also served in the British army in Egypt/Sudan and Bermuda.  I would be very grateful indeed if anyone knows anything else about this John O’Callaghan and whether or not he had any other children.  I know that he was still alive in 1888, as he is mentioned on Peter's wedding certificate, but after that I can find no record of him as yet.  He was more than likely buried in Kilcrumper Cemetary, and there is a record of a J O'Callaghan, mason, being buried there, but no date is given.e

Thanks,

Ceallachain

Greetings from Bermuda

)'Callaghan - abt. 1888 in Bermuda:-

I have not come up with anything as yet, however, I will rule out the books I have enlisted in my search:

1) Bermuda Index L/Z 1784-1914 - info taken from old newspapers - compiled by Hallett. - nothing found.
2) Forty Years of Convict Labour - Bermuda 1823-1863 - compiled by Hallett. - nothing found.
3) Early Colonists of the Bahamas - A selection of records - compiled by Hallett. - nothing found.
4) Boer Prisoners of War in Bermuda - by colin Benbow.  This book does not have an index of individuals.  I have looked through it, however, do not see any mention of anyone by the name O'Callaghan.
5) 19th Century Church Registers of Bermuda - baptisms/marriages/burials - compiled by Hallett. - nothing found.

So sorry, I have not found anything.  I will keep the surname listed on my 'look out' sheet.

Note that Bermudian information compiled and put into print by the Halletts under the name Juniper Press are in libraries world wide. Possibly be in a library near you if you are in the UK.
Check your local library.

Many thanks,Serendipity.

Peter was stationed in Bermuda from 1883-1886, with the 2nd Battallion of the York and Lancaster regiment.  I expect that he would have been at Fort Prospect??  He had a foot amputated whilst stationed there and returned to the UK in 1886, spending some time in Netley Hospital, Southampton.  He then returned to Fermoy and was married in 1888.  I very much appreciate you looking this up and if you do come across any snippet at all, I would be enormously grateful.

Thanks again,

Ceallachain

Hi again,
Due to the fact that your ancestor was not baptised, married nor buried in Bermuda I doubt I will find anything about him.
The research books I have in my own library are mainly from the church registers.

You can try contacting the Bermuda Maritime Museum at (www.marmuse@ibl.bm)
Good luck and if there is anything you wish for me to look up for you please do not hesitate to ask.
Sincerely,
Judy in Bermuda

My grandmother was Nora O'Callaghan from Fermoy in County Cork she was born in 1883 (I think) her sister was Julia and them immigrated through London and NYC in 1910 or very early 20's.  Her father was Micheal O'Callaghan.   Both my Grandmpther and sister Julia died in 1960's
