the above named was last to be living at 9 bryn terrace Pontypool in 1911 and again in 1918 (Edward grimes his son died in the france and his head stone said the address).

question is when did Thomas die ?? 1928   his wife was a rose ellen (nee davis) grimes married in 1889 wootton under edge

I see the headstone giving the Pontypool address, but in 1911 the family, Thomas, wife Ellen Rose and 8 children (including Edward) were living in Wooton-under-Edge.  Can't give too much detail off 1911 census.  They were also at Wooton-under-Edge in 1901:

Not found a death for Thomas as yet, but I assume that the death you are considering is the 1928 death for a 58 year old Thomas Grimes in Pontypool 11a 194.

Have had look for the death for Rose Ellen and can only find 2 possible death for a Rose E Grimes between 1911 & 1970 on freebmd:
