Bastardy records.
« on: Friday 05 May 17 21:50 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to discover the identity of my grandfather.  My grandmother had three daughters out of wedlock between 1920-1925 with no father on any birth certificate.  Can anyone tell me how I could trace this man?  Does Manchester Library hold any Bastardy records?

My grandmother was Annie Vickers and her daughters were Teresa Vickers born 1920, Winifred born 1922 and my mother, Mary Vickers born 14 September 1925. They came from the centre of Manchester.

Many thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Hi
The birth records for the 3 daughters all have the mother's maiden name as Shaw. Do you have any of the birth certificates?

An Annie Shaw married a Charles Vickers in 1914. Did they separate or did Charles die then Annie went on to have her three daughters using her husband's name?  My great great grandmother did exactly that after the death of her husband but it was in the mid 1800's.

Hi

Yes, I have all the Birth Certificates.  We thought that Charles Vickers was their father but he died in 1918.   My grandmother only told Teresa shortly before she died that he wasn't their father.

They were called "affiliation orders" in the 20th Century. Your only hope is if there was a child maintenance order made under the Affiliation Orders Acts against the father at the local court.

I would think the mother would not have gone to court if the birth has been registered under a deceased husband's name.

Hi Thornbird4,

Can we just clarify to avoid confusion what exactly is on the birth certificates? Does it say something like Annie Vickers formerly Shaw and the father's information was not entered leaving it blank? Or does it name Annie's husband as the father of the children?
