William STATHAM
« on: Sunday 30 April 17 05:46 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm trying to find information on William STATHAM's arrival in Australia. He married Elizabeth WESTROP some time before 1859. They had two children that I know of in Victoria, Ausralia - Emily Maria STATHAM b.1859 & Amy Elizabeth STATHAM b.1862.

Any information on William STATHAM's or his parents arrival in Australia would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

Have you eliminated the 1852 birth of William John STATHAM indexed at Vic BDM online with parents as William and Elizabeth?  Reg. no 22829
http://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/home/family+history/search+your+family+history/

Have you checked the NSW Archives Immigration lists as Victoria was not separated from NSW until 1851?

Have you checked PROV for Passenger Lists?

Does his death cert give you 'how long in the colony/ies'?

Previous thread about this family
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=770383.0

There are two deaths registered in the name of William STATHAM in Vic to 1888.  One for a 60 year old in 1859 and another for a man aged 35 in 1865.  The 35 year old died in Yarra Bend Asylum.  I would suggest that the elder Wm whose wife appears to be Martha Emily, died in 1859 and the younger was his son and father of Amy Elizabeth, Emily and Wm.  You would need certs however the 1865 has no identifying info ie place of birth or parents.

Inquest Index
STATHAM William  35 years
At Yarra Bend   1865   Ref#712
Cause Brain Disease
Occupation Lunatic

From that other current thread on this Australia Board (Thanks Cando for providing that link),  may I add my support to the suggestion that some certificates (or official transcriptions for NSW) seem to be the sensible way to help sort out this quest.  Otherwise it is likely we will continue to duplicate lookups.   :(

Death of Amy's sister.

STATHAM Emily Maria   [Born Geelong]
Father William  Mother Elizabeth WESTROP
At Brighton  1947  88 years  Reg#12210

I cannot see a birth for either Emily or Amy on the Victorian birth indexes.  There is a STATHAM baptism for a Wm John in 1852 at Geelong with parents Wm and Elizabeth.

I think  you are going to need some certificates.  A transcription of the NSW marriage certificate would give you the ages and places of birth of the bride and groom; the names of the parents of the bride and groom including their mothers' maiden names and fathers' occupations.

There was a convict Wm STATHAM who served time in Tasmania.  I don't have time to search today.  You can search
