Carl Ernst August Lobeck is the correct name. I believe Gustave is a red herring.
I have found Carl Lobeck in business with another fella in Swansea. They went bankrupt 1865. Shortly afterwards he moves to Falmouth, Cornwall to start the same business before going bankrupt again.

His occupation in 1911 suggests this is  the same chap: https://newspapers.library.wales/view/3233039/3233042/38/lobeck

That's an interesting article. One slight hiccup is that the eldest son of Carl Ernst Lobeck, born 1872 was called Carl August Lobeck. They are my GG and G Grandfather's.
Both changed their name to the angelised name of Charles. So I'm not sure which one this article relates to as they are both residing in Cardiff at this time. But a great find, thanks.

It was the fact the chap in the article was a commission agent, as C Lobeck senior is in 1891 and 1911. The son is a butcher's assistant in 1911 and would  have only been about 17-18 at the time of the events complained of in the paper. Can't see a man that young being trusted with the large (for the time) sum of money involved

This however is Charles junior - https://newspapers.library.wales/view/4168075/4168078/74/lobeck. He and Annie seem to be back together by 1911

Carl August Lobeck (son) was born 1872. He was married to Annie (Nancekeevil). So in 1906 he would have been 34 yrs not 17/18. He was a butchers assistant as well as a water clerk ..... They're buried together.

The original story I linked to in reply 11 was from 1892 and related to the period September 1890 - September 1891, so Carl junior was under 20

Ha, ha, with you now Mabel.

The surname Lobeck is a variation of Lohbeck. The Lobeck version comes from lower saxony or Rhineland..
It's so difficult to track down Karl Ernst leaving Germany and arriving in the UK.
His father was described as a farmer with a 1st name of Charles, which probably means it was Karl.
