Where to begin...
« on: Friday 29 July 05 01:11 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace my fathers' side, and all I know is that Great Grandfather John Fisher Sloan was born abt 1866 in Ballymena, Antrim, Ireland, and his father, Robert was born in (?) abt 1832 and came to USA July 7, 1882 aboard the ship State of Indiana, from Glasgow, Scotland and Larne, Ireland, to New York, travelling in steerage... Robert married a Mary Ann Fisher, and that's all I know...
Can anyone suggest a course of action at this point...?

How about trying to get a birth cert for Great Grandfather John Fisher Sloan. You have the bare bones to start a search in the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland.

Familysearch.org has several entries for John SLOAN, including this Ancestral File record for John Fisher SLOAN:

Birth:     1868
   Ballymena (?), Antrim, Ireland
Death:     7 Oct 1915
   Brooklyn, N.y.
Burial:     9 Oct 1915

There are lots of John SLOAN baptisms on the IGI as well, none with the name Fisher, but would be well worth a look!

A Google search - Ballymena Civil Registration District Co. Antrim : Births@Jane Lyons shows several people with surname Sloan between 1867 - 1884

I am looking for information on a John Sloan from Antrim born in 1697. Would anyone here know where I could begin to search for information this old in Antrim/ the whole of Ireland? Had to have migrated to the US pre-1729. Are records this old still in existence, and are they still searchable?

Thanks,

John Sloan born in County Antrim  Ireland was the oldest son of Archibald Sloan b.1667 in County Antrim  Ireland whose wife is unknown.  John was born before 1718 and his brother Samuel b.1718 in County Antrim  Ireland  Archibald migrated to Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania shortly thereafter because another child Archibald was born in Lancaster county PA in 1719 .  John had five siblings born in the US in Lancaster county.  Hope this helps.
