There are various records for Irvins at the North Shields local studies.
Might this Richard Irvin have some connection to you.
This old cutting has no date on.
However article mentions Scottish Presbyterian background and that he was the son of a man who started a quayside fishing empire.  They also had trawler businesses and other family ventures.

Hi River Tyne Lass

Thank you. I have received some wonderful information from people on this site, some descendants of this family, and the family did, indeed, own a trawling business.

From what I can gather, Barbara Steel IRVINE's father, John Hannell IRVIN, is connected to Richard IRVIN, however, I think he was a couple of generations earlier.

Kind regards

I am glad to hear you have had lots of support on here. :)
The A-Z files at North Shields local studies have various bits of research in their Irvin file.
The John above is included who appears twice on Find A Grave.  I am sure this is the same person as they have same date of death. Perhaps this should be reported as a duplicate?

I saw an article in the folder about a fairly recent exhibition at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre about 'Folks who shaped Shields' and an earlier Richard was one of those featured - scroll down to see his mention.  I have added a link to the Old Low Lights site.

Richard Irvin born 23 Feb 1883 has a photo and a bio in the Edwardian Biography volume under the section of Commerce and Shipping at North Shields local studies as mentioned on above thread.

The bio mentions that he was the son of John Hannel and that he married in 1873 to Anne, daughter of the late John Driver of Westray, Orkney Island and had five sons and four daughters.

Again, thank you, River Tyne Lass.

According to the Durham Bishops Transcript, I have Barbara Steele IRVINE, born 1816 to John Hennll IRVINE, and wife, Jane, in North Shields. Her father was a Mariner. I believe Jane to be Jane HILL.

I had been searching for IRVINE. Barbara, my 3x g-grandmother, and my gg-grandfather was named John Irvine SIMPSON. So I had been searching the name IRVINE until I found other source information stating the family was IRVIN. Interestingly enough, although Barbara named her son John Irvine SIMPSON, another branch believed the name to be IRVING hence throughout that branch many children had the middle name of Irving. In my branch they all received Irvine for a middle name. I believe the inability to read, is the reason for the mistakes in spelling.

My IRVIN family is a couple of generations before the named Richard IRVIN from the fishing fleet. He would be at least 2 generations down the line, I would think.

I appreciate your help. My aunt, who first mentioned the fishing fleet from North Shields in her writings, has passed now, sadly before I could give her any information regarding this family.

Kind regards
Jeni Simpson
