Do you know who he married? Do you know any of his siblings' names? An English marriage record will tell you his father's name and occupation. If you know his siblings' names that may help in identifying the right birth index.

Thanks all, massive help! Forgot about having to order the certificates oops.  How do you look up in the GRO indexes where is shows the mothers maiden name?  The first in the list of eight is the correct one as I have 8b 109 from Ancestry.  Many thanks

I don't see how you know that is correct unless you know his mother's maiden name.

Looking at other births for Williams/Cole, they can be matched to a family in 1911 but sadly, there is no John. There might be others of course.
If you want to be certain, you need to purchase the birth certificate.
Do you have a marriage certificate with father's name?

Did he have any siblings with less common christian names?  If you are trying to establish his parentage it may be easier to find one of their births
