I wonder if he had previous military experience? As otherwise surely it would have been relatively unusual for a man with family in his late 40s at the beginning of WW1 to enlist? Would that link in with the TF connection? I'm no expert...
They were often a bit inaccurate with their age, and sometimes on purpose - although perhaps an 11 year discrepancy is pushing it. Haven't found any other possibilities though.

Hi Jim

Would you say this could be my Gt GT Grandfather then? Does the age difference tally with things which happened back then. I know from his granddaughter that he was supposed to have been in WW1. I had thought that he would have possibly been too old. I don't think I have ever managed to find any army records for the Edward Lauderdale mentioned on the medal card, etc.. that would prove one way or the other that this is or isn't mine.  Any help once again would be truly appreciated.

Thanks

Many older men were involved in home defence & never went overseas & he might have been one of those.
Served in WW1 but at home so there won't be a medal card for him.
Many young men lied about their age in order to get in but I've never heard of it the other way round.

Forgot to mention 21/538 refers to the 21st. Batt. NF. They were a Pals Battalion raised in Newcastle in 1914 so no reason to believe it's him.

The one anomaly is that there doesn't appear to be an Edward Lauderdale born C. 1874.

That was my only reservation for not ignoring this particular set of records completely. I have searched to find another Edward Lauderdale and can only find mine. The only other I can find was a cousin of his who unfortunately died in infancy. Maybe I am missing something, certainly wouldn't be the first time ::)

Thanks
