Can anybody find James Graham or Margaret after 1871?
« on: Tuesday 04 April 17 07:13 BST (UK) »
99.9% sure this Margaret is Margaret Brown, sister to my 4x great grandmother Jane Brown, whose birthplace in Scotland is unknown. I can't find James or Margaret in a UK 1881 census so I began looking abroad in hopes she died in Australia or somewhere where the birthplace and mother's maiden name are named on the death certificate. I haven't found her or James but John Wharton, Margaret's nephew here in the 1871 census with them, was living in Wagga Wagga, Australia by 1879. I haven't found his ship's passenger record but found him there through the Trove newspaper website, searching his name with his occupation, a tailor. Unfortunately I haven't found James there the same way, also a tailor.

Margaret's 1841/51 censuses put her age as 14/23 with the birth year of 1827/28. 1861 census is officially missing or wasn't recorded for her area. This 1871 census puts her age and birth year as 38 and 1833, but there are many factors indicating this is the right margaret: Scotland birth place, nephew John Wharton living with them, James' signature on another family member's marriage certificate and there appears to be a marriage for James and Margaret in 1863 in Carlisle.

I've had a good look for the couple following the 1871 census but hoping someone else knows other tricks and may find something, so please have a go. Thank you!

1871 census:

 RG10/5208/60 p18

James Graham       Head      Married   36   Tailor      Kirklinton, Cumberland
Margaret Graham    Wife      Married   38   -            Scotland
John Wharton       Boarder   Married   19   Tailor      Wetheral, Cumberland

I cannot find them on the 1881 census, I did find their marriage
Marriages Jun 1863
BROWN  Margaret     Carlisle  10b 663
GRAHAM  James       Carlisle  10b 663

The marriage certificate will hopefully give the names & vocation of the parents the wife's father will be the same as Jane's! Together with again maybe family witnesses.

Thanks for having a look for them elzabels, I really appreciate that. I alluded to that marriage in my post but couldn't be positive it's them as I can't find the other two people on the page named Bell and Monkhouse in the 1881 census or any children by them, so can't say for sure who married who. I was all set to purchase it anyway but decided against as it wouldn't tell me anything new unless I were to get really lucky with the witnesses, so holding out at this stage hoping to find something better.

If you've looked on Trove then you've probably seen John WHARTON's obit?

Lots of info, but sadly none about when he came to Australia, or his Aunt and Uncle.

There are some articles mentioning Mrs Margaret GRAHAM of North Wagga Wagga in 1881 in relation to straying cattle, but hard to say if they are your Margaret.  ???

Can't see a death at Wagga Wagga in the NSW BDM readily - do you know James and Margaret's parents' names?

If they came to Australia don't forget that at that time is wasn't a country, just a collections of six colonies each keeping their own records.

You will need to search in the archives of each state.
Richardson, Sherman, Gillam, Hitchcock, Neighbour, Groom, Walton, Strange, Littleford, Brown, Guy, Abbs, Tasker, Bartlett, Farey, Etteridge

Thanks for looking maddys52! I had seen the obituary for John Wharton, yes, but hadn't found the articles about Mrs. Margaret Graham you've shared. Interesting stuff and I'll have another dig around the Wagga Wagga newspapers.

Margaret's parents were William Brown and Jane, James' parents were I believe William Graham and Elizabeth. I'd found one Margaret Graham on NSW BMD whose parents were William and Jane (from 1902 I think) but found an obituary on Trove and was able to rule her out.

Thanks mirl :)

Thanks elzabels. I have that, but it's just not important enough to buy the certificate to confirm.
