99.9% sure this Margaret is Margaret Brown, sister to my 4x great grandmother Jane Brown, whose birthplace in Scotland is unknown. I can't find James or Margaret in a UK 1881 census so I began looking abroad in hopes she died in Australia or somewhere where the birthplace and mother's maiden name are named on the death certificate. I haven't found her or James but John Wharton, Margaret's nephew here in the 1871 census with them, was living in Wagga Wagga, Australia by 1879. I haven't found his ship's passenger record but found him there through the Trove newspaper website, searching his name with his occupation, a tailor. Unfortunately I haven't found James there the same way, also a tailor.
Margaret's 1841/51 censuses put her age as 14/23 with the birth year of 1827/28. 1861 census is officially missing or wasn't recorded for her area. This 1871 census puts her age and birth year as 38 and 1833, but there are many factors indicating this is the right margaret: Scotland birth place, nephew John Wharton living with them, James' signature on another family member's marriage certificate and there appears to be a marriage for James and Margaret in 1863 in Carlisle.
I've had a good look for the couple following the 1871 census but hoping someone else knows other tricks and may find something, so please have a go. Thank you!
