Walton Hospital started life as a West Derby Poor Law Institution in 1868. It was at first a workhouse providing facilities for healthy as well as sick inmates. During the early twentieth century it expanded its role as a hospital. From 1913 it was no longer known as a workhouse, being known as the Walton Institution. After the abolition of the Poor Law Guardians in 1930 it changed its name once more to Walton Hospital and no longer had responsibilities for the healthy poor. The hospital became part of the National Health Service in 1948 and became particularly known for its treatment of neurological problems. The hospital closed in 1994.

quite a strange situation - Scourfield St is the area close to Edge Hill station - a mile away from Sefton General Hospital - where both my sons were born - I am in Garston 4 miles from Scourfield st - so why would a lady go to Walton Neurological Hospital to give birth ??..about 8 miles away from Scourfield st - the only reason I can think of is that maybe Alice had an accident and suffered a head injury and that was why she was in Walton ??...do you know when Alice Stokes died ??

There was a maternity ward at Walton Hospital. Paul McCartney was born there.

How long after birth was the child adopted? I'm wondering if the mother went to court for maintenance money from the father. The year 1936 is within the available years for Liverpool's Affiliation Registers. Here is a link to my experience using these records:-

Are you sure it is a 4 and not a 7? Could it be the handwriting? As people have said Walton Hospital was 107 Rice Lane.

107 Rice Lane is what it says. The 7 has some curlicues & I mistook it for a 4. Sorry.
