Challis family
« on: Wednesday 15 March 17 11:56 GMT (UK) »
Good morning

I am tracing my grandmothers family this is what I have found

John Denning Challis married Josephine Farrell in 1886 and had 5 children

Sarah my grandmother m George Wade in 1920

Edwin 1896 d 1903

George 1894 d 1929 cannot see a marriage for him

Martha 1897 m Trevor Combes 1918

John born 1887 is where I am stuck I have him on 1901 census and a couple of merchant ship records in 1904 and 1902 and then my trail runs out.

There is an immigration record in 1908 but unsure as it gives is occupation as a farmer, which seems a big change in occupation.

I wonder if someone could add anything to this for me please.

Many thanks

1901 Census return at 10 in Sextons Court (Kingstown, Dublin) LINK

1911 census return at 13.2 in Clarence Street, Part of (Kingstown No. 1, Dublin) LINK

edited to add
I think that the 1911 census referring to number of children born alive is shown as six as they have excluded Elizabeth who died aged 3 hours and the two infants born in 1901 and 1904.

There is a family tree on a paid site with John Denning CHALLIS included

It suggests that John Denning CHALLIS married Rosina PILTON in 1928 for which there is a marriage record
UK Civil Reference: Islington Middlesex 1928 Jul-Sep Q3 V1b P389

and that he died in 1956
UK Civil Reference: Chelsea, London 1956 Oct-Dec Q4 V5c P318

You would have to get these certificates to cross check the details especially as there is a birth in Devon in the 1880s of a John Danning CHALLIS and these records could relate to him rather than your John

Thank you so much , I found him on a couple of ships prior to this, so he was  around in 1921,   will have to try and track him down after this.

What was the role of a steward ?
