mustard factory in West Ham
« on: Sunday 12 March 17 15:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi, according to the 1911 census, my Great x3 Grandmother, and her siblings are all working (those old enough) in a Mustard Factory. They live in Geere Road, West Ham, so I presume that the factory would be relatively local to them. Does any one know where the factory was, or any information about it? I have searched on line and have found lots about other factories, but not a Mustard Factory!

I'd be grateful if anyone does have info they could share! thanks in advance.

A search for 'mustard Silvertown' online gave ...

Pair of early 20th century 'CWS Mustard Silvertown' tinplate walnut effect tea caddies, litho-printed with marquetry inlay, the top with wreath and ribbon tied musical instruments, 7 in.

MUSIC CASKET. A COOPERATIVE WHOLESALE SOCIETY TIN In the form of a sarcophagus oak caddy, marked C.W.S. Mustard, Silvertown, 7in. (18cm.) wide.

tin, CWS Mustard; 12.00 x 8.40 x 5.20
tin, brown CWS Mustard Silvertown; 11.50 x 15.50 x 9.00

...amongst others.

So far, I can only find the CWS Millenium (Flour) Mills in Silvertown, but the above would appear to indicate a mustard factory there as well.

There was a factory - C.W.S. factory at Silvertown that made pickles, mustard is used in the manufacturer of pickles so perhaps the mustard factory was connected to the pickle factory.

Yes, JJen, just found similar reference ...

... this map of 1920 shows Co-operative Society Works, including the corn mill, centrally against the river. The site is partially empty on the earlier 1896 OS map, with Tay Wharf being a Jam Factory.

https://archive.org/stream/storyofcwsjubile00redfuoft/storyofcwsjubile00redfuoft_djvu.txt
has the full text (several hundred pages!) of The story of the C.W.S.; the jubilee history of the Co-operative Wholesale Society Limited, 1863-1913 by Percy Redfern (published by CWS)

Briefly:
1896 - intitial plans to purchase land in Silvertown (with rail and wharf access)
1900 - flour mill opened
1908 - soap factory opened on Silvertown site

(page 307) "The account of the forty or more productive enterprises already noticed has left unincluded the C.W.S. Silvertown Grocery Productive Works. This comprises all the various departments that have sprung from the simple packing of flour, rice, peas, and similar groceries at the London Branch. The building of a separate factory adjacent to the Flour Mill on the C.W.S. land at Silvertown (West Ham) had become necessary by 1904. At Silvertown the work extended from making sweets and jellies and developing a general manufacturing confectionery business to the supplying of tested seeds and seed potatoes. A big enlargement, completed toward the end of 1909, left the federation in possession of a factory employing nearly 400 workers. "
