Child Maintenance Records
« on: Saturday 11 March 17 21:02 GMT (UK) »
Advice please on how and where I can find Records of Child Maintenance probably Chorlton-upon-Medlock 1920s/1930s? I have names of two Children born at same address with different Fathers (whose Names I also have) who I believe were granted Child Maintenance. As I am overseas is this something that can be undertaken by someone local?  ???

I suspect that, even if those records exist, they would be closed under a 100 year rule.

I'm afraid I don't know about the 1920s/1930s, but in the 19th century I have found bastardy cases dealt with at the Quarter Sessions.

Yes, I have made enquiries about records relating to a child in Durham. They are closed for 100 years after the last entry in that volume. I believe in the 1930s /40s any hearing would have been in the local magistrates' court.

You need to look for Affiliation Registers. Some local archives still have them. My local archive has them for 1924-1964. I was able to arrange to view the register for 1934 and found a father's name for an illegitimate child. If you can't get a look-up you could pay for the archives research service to do it. First things first find out what they have either by looking at the local council's archive catalogue or send them an e-mail asking if they have Affiliation Registers.

Your request may not be seen here. I suggest you start a new thread with Clara's name in the title on the Hertfordshire board & give details of any known dates. I presume she was baptised Clara Wells. In case you haven't tried before, it's very difficult to trace fathers of illegitimate children, so you may not get many responses. A local bastardy bond may be the only resource available IF they survive and IF one was applied for. Have you found her baptism? occasionally putative fathers are named in the register.
