John Tinker
« on: Wednesday 08 March 17 18:20 GMT (UK) »
As far as I thought, John Tinker, from around Meltham/Almondbury, was a wool carder most of his life. There's this 1841 census of him at 25 with a profession that almost looks like 'publican'. Any ideas on what the profession word alongside John Tinker would be? All guesses welcome. Thank you.

I'd say it was definitely Publican. Bear in mind that in the 1841 census the age given as 25 could mean anything from 25 to 29.

John Tinker married Catherine Pettefar 13 April 1836 in Kirkburton. They were both aged 23 and gave their residence as Newmill, Yorks. According to the 1851 Census Catherine was from Nwark, Notts.

I have found 4 children Elizabeth registered 1840 Huddersfield
Ellen 1839 Huddersfield
Eliza 1840 Newark
Edward 1842 Newark. All have mmn Pettefar

FreeReg has the baptism in Newark, Notts of Edward, Eliza and Ellen inMarch 1842. All three baptisms give John Tinker's occupation as Innkeeper so I'd say Publican is correct in the 1841 Census.

thanks for the additional publican and family info. Emeltom.

Interesting that you uncovered 2 Elizas where I have only 1. But, I do have 2 Edwards!! And the dates, the dates. Always the dates!!

Good to know about the Innkeeper refs. Thanks to you @suzard and @arthurk for contributing too. All appreciated and noted.
