BURBAGE Family in Melksham

Worth a look at 'Burbidge' from keevil originally from East Knoyle, & well documented pedigree back to John Burbage in 1508. Keevil has lots of Burbidge entries inc name Elias going back into 17thC,& some impressive Burbidge family box tombs to the left of the church gate. Family branch links to Erlestoke, Seend, Bulkington & Melksham.

Some of my Burbidge/ Burbages were baptised in Seend.
I'm trying to place Elias, who was probably born c1790 in Melksham.
I need to do more work.

Dennis appears to be the same person who is son of Elias and Juliana but this Elias is far too young - the writing is very clear, definitely 35

Dennis may be staying with a relative, but I still can't find his parents.
I have seen the census image and it does say 35 & 30, so another Elias must be hiding somewhere.
I think I need to light a lavendar candle & have a cuppa.

Do you have a Henry Burbidge (b. 1850) who married a Sarah Stickler (b. 1849) on 13 Feb 1875 in your tree?
Henry was born in Tinhead Wiltshire, Sarah in Hawkridge Wiltshire.

The more I think about it the more likely it seems that  Elias and Hannah in 1841 are your Elias and Joanna/Juliana - the ages having been copied down wrong and if Joanna was spelt Johanna she could well be known as Hannah  (as well as get miscopied as Juliana.)  Shame it isn't the 51 as then it would say whether John 20 is their son which would confirm the mistake. I cannot find an Elias and Hannah of the right ages in 51 - of course they might have died. Really need further baptisms of children of Elias and Joanna to sort this out.

Hello all...I am a late comer to this post...My great great grandmother was Mary Burbidge born Keevil in about 1809.
Living only 60 miles away from Keevil ,we wandered down there today to the church and found three 'box type' Burbidge tombs to the left of the gate as you walked up the path.
As you may understand,the inscriptions aren't too readable....but here goes.

Charles Burbidge departed this life February 7th.,1768 aged 59 years and Joan his wife departed this life January 19th.,1796 aged 69

also near this place lies the bodies of Ann,George ,Charles and Robert sons and daughters of Charles and Joan

On another
Andrew Burbidge died October 18th,1829 aged 64 years

next to the above inscription S ?? wife of William Burbidge Died August 6th.,1840 (?)aged 70 years

On another
Ann Died June 176? in the 9th(?) year of here life
George Died November 1769
Charles died October 1786 aged 69 years (it said something 9 and it looked like 69)
Robert ...unreadable

On another Elias Burbidge 1780 58th ? year of his life?

It seemed that the family were quite well off as the tombs were quite sophisticated..any ideas on what they did?
I have taken some photos of the church and the tombs..sadly,they're on 35mm so will be put on cd before I can email them to any interested listees.
Meanwhile ,if anyone has my great great grandmother, Mary,born Keevil in about 1809 on their list,please let me know her parents/grandparents details.She married James Lewis in Hereford in 1832 and lived in Garway in Herefordshire for much of her life.

Don't know if this is any use for later researches but I have just found a BURBIDGE headstone in Hilperton Parish Church, Trowbridge.

George Burbidge died 9/1/1849 aged 73.
Jane his wife died 13/2/1831 aged 52.
John died in infancy.
Mary Ann Burbidge born 25/1/1802 died 20/3/1885.
Mary Janet (daughter of above) born 14/7/1837 died 24/5/1838
John FERGUSSON (Husband of Mary Ann) born 25/6/1797 at Mosshead, Irondarrock, Da??ry, Galloway, Ayrshire, Scotland. Died 27/1/1876.
