Old Monkland Cemetery, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire

Hi, Seeking anyone who may be visiting Old Monkland Cemetery, Coatbridge, to photograph 2 Lairs where my Grandmother,Grandfather & Uncle are resting. I have full Lair location details for both sites.

Apologies for not responding to your kind offer to visit Old Monkland Cemetery but I have been away for a few days. A local Family History Society has visited and taken photographs for me thank you very much.

If anyone is visiting Old Monkland cemetery  could they look out for a headstone for my g.g.g. grandparents William George? Irwin/Irvine b.c. 1796 and Jane  Irwin nee Erskine b.c. 1803.William died at Coatbridge b/w. 1841 and 1851?. Jane died pre 1851.

I don't have a location but they were Episcopal so if there is a section for this denomination they may be there.

Any idea how I could get plot information.

I live in Australia so can't come myself.

Thanks Forfarian but I could not find anything and am confused.

I read somewhere that Old Monkland Cemetery was not opened until the 1870s but LDS have a film titled:

Coatbridge, Old Monkland Cemetery Inscriptions 1700-1950.

As my ancestors died pre 1851 Census (one in Coatbridge other unknown) I am at a loss to know their burial place. Possibly they did not have headstones as not all their children were grown and had to be supported by an unmarried sister at first.

Then what you are looking for is the Old Monkland parish kirkyard, not the Old Monkland cemetery.

Forget about the LDS for the moment. It looks as if they have either misnamed their film, or at the very least extended the dates it covers back to long before the cemetery existed.

Go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and check the list of parish registers at https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/files//research/list-of-oprs/list-of-oprs-621-660.pdf to see which of the Old Monkland parish burial registers have survived. Any burials will be indexed in the 'Church registers' section of the Scotland's People web site (under 'Advanced People Search').

You could, of course, arrange to rent the LDS film at your nearest LDS Family History Centre and see what it actually is.

Hi Linda,

Old Monkland Cemetery was not opened until 1875 and so your ancestors would have been buried in Old Monkland Churchyard, for which there are no records other than monumental inscriptions. The large modern-day cemetery is an extension of the ancient churchyard.
I posted a list of lair (plot) owners for Old Monkland churchyard on this List but having looked through it, I can't see any Irwin/Irvine names. They may not be buried there or, they may have been interred in common ground. The churchyard was open to all residents of the parish, no matter what their religion and there are no separate sections in any parochial burial grounds here in Scotland.
