McDonald marriage in Ireland
« on: Tuesday 28 February 17 10:14 GMT (UK) »
I am just wondering if anyone could help me, please, with a lookup for my ancestors in Ireland? I have only found them in Durham, England, in the 1851 census - I cannot find them before or after that, although I know they travelled from Ireland to Scotland, and then into England. I would love to find the marriage of Peter McDonald (Macdonald) and Catherine??? but I have hit a brick wall with it.

Peter Macdonald    Head    M    48    Ireland
Catherine Macdonald    Wife    F    43    Ireland
Agnes Macdonald    Daughter    F    19    Scotland
John Thos Macdonald    Son    M    17    Scotland
Isabella Macdonald    Daughter    F    13    Scotland
Cathrine Macdonald    Daughter    F    10    Bartley, Durham
James Macdonald    Son    M    7    Middlesbro, Yorkshire
Robert Macdonald    Son    M    5    Middlesbro, Yorkshire
William Macdonald    Son    M    3    Middlesbro, Yorkshire

Isabella was my great-grandmother, and, although she was born in Glasgow, Scotland, I have just discovered, from this 1851 census, that her parents Peter and Catherine, were born in Ireland! I've been hunting for them in Scotland for years! I would love to be able to knock down this brick wall. I don't know Catherine's surname ....  yet.

Many many thanks in advance.

As their eldest child was born in the 1830s they won't have a marriage cert so you will need a church record.
You need Catherine's surname, I'd start with a birth cert for one or more of the children, I believe Certs in Scotland tend to have more information but not sure if that covers all dates.
I'd start there if I was you, and hope to get an idea where in Ireland they came from and their religion.

Too early for civil registration of births in Scotland but all the English-born children should have birth certificates which will show Catherine's maiden name. However, even with that information you'll need to narrow down the area (parish or county at least to start searching for surviving registers) but I still wouldn't rule out a marriage in Scotland.

from Tithes Applotment Books 1823-1837 based upon the index work of the Irish Genealogy Hub.   The relevant original books are in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) Belfast The record is very simple
McDonald, Peter-- Townland: Anahay Year: 1835-Killevy-Armagh
McDonald, Peter-- Townland: Anahay Year: 1835-Killyman-Armagh
McDonald, Peter-- Townland: Moorlough Yr: 1834-Galloon-Fermanagh

So its possible he is one of these entries but equally possible he is not  so do help us with any crumbs of information from his early Scottish records

those places mentioned in Durham are where Many ulster folk migrated to Durham as the Londonderry family sought extra employment for their business in mines etc in Durham etc but not in Glasgow.  In particular from Co Down.
sorry cant help further.

Thank you so much for the help! I posted a request in the Census lookups, and I received a lot more information, which was wonderful. Several people found my McDonald family in the censuses in Durham, and it has come to light that Catherine's maiden name was Dryden. So I now know that I am looking for the marriage of a Peter McDonald and Catherine Dryden. Their eldest child, Peter, was 14 in the 1841 census, so I would assume the marriage must have taken place around 1825. But still no information as to where it took place! In the 1841 census Peter and Catherine named their birthplace as Scotland, in the 1851 census they changed it to Ireland, and in 1861 Peter (now widowed) names his birthplace as Scotland again. Confusion.
Many thanks for all the help! Jennie

.... So I now know that I am looking for the marriage of a Peter McDonald and Catherine Dryden....

It would be useful to know how this came to light... from the English birth certs?
Where were they in 1841?
What was their religion?
The more you tell us, the easier it is to point you in the right direction, as opposed to just giving you generalized advice.

Hi, yes, her surname showed up in the GRO index record of the birth of her daughter, Catherine. Catherine was 10 years old in the 1851 census, and her birth shows up as:

MACDONALD, CATHERINE        DRYDEN
GRO Reference: 1840  J Quarter in DURHAM AND LANCHESTER  Volume 24  Page 86

In 1841 the family were in  Civil Parish Stranton Durham  ..... Piece 316 Book 12 Folio 24

Peter Macdonald age 38 Labourer born Scotland ( labourer )
Catherine Macdonald age 30 born Scotland
Peter 14,
Maria 12,
Agnes 10,
John 8,
Isabella 3,
Catherine 1

No idea what their religion was, though.

Thanks again!

Jennie you should check for the births of the sons to see if mother's maiden name is the same ?
