McDonald family in the census??
« on: Tuesday 28 February 17 10:07 GMT (UK) »
I am just wondering if anyone could help me, please, with a lookup for my ancestors in Durham? I have only found them in the 1851 census - I cannot find them before or after that, although I know they were there because their children's births - and their deaths - were registered in Stockton between 1838 and 1865. This is the info I have from the 1851 census:

Peter Macdonald    Head    M    48    Ireland
Catherine Macdonald    Wife    F    43    Ireland
Agnes Macdonald    Daughter    F    19    Scotland
John Thos Macdonald    Son    M    17    Scotland
Isabella Macdonald    Daughter    F    13    Scotland
Cathrine Macdonald    Daughter    F    10    Bartley, Durham
James Macdonald    Son    M    7    Middlesbro, Yorkshire
Robert Macdonald    Son    M    5    Middlesbro, Yorkshire
William Macdonald    Son    M    3    Middlesbro, Yorkshire

Sometimes the surname is spelled McDonald. Isabella was my great-grandmother, and, although she was born in Glasgow, Scotland, I have just discovered, from this census, that her parents Peter and Catherine, were born in Ireland! No wonder I could not find their marriage! I've been hunting for them in Scotland for years! I had always believed Isabella was Scottish. I was just wondering if anyone can find the family for me in any of the other censuses, as I would love to be able to knock down this brick wall.

Many many thanks in advance.

GRO Index search for Catharine McDonald's death gives age 54.

Agnes McDonald married James Lanigan S1853 Stockton10a 117, but apparently not listed on FreeBMD ???

Peter Langan's birth registration gives McDonald as MMN.  Also John Thomas Langan.

Agnes McDonald married James Lanigan S1853 Stockton10a 117, but apparently not listed on FreeBMD ???

The sheets for the Quarterly Returns for marriages had  spaces for two marriages a page from 1852, so there should only be two males and two females, and for S 1853 Stockton10a 117 there are
Marriages Sep 1853
ACKWITH  Thomas      Stockton    10a   117
Defty    Henry        Stockton    10a   117
SHIPPY    Jane         Stockton    10a   117
WATSON Margaret      Stockton    10a   117

So there cannot be an other marriage with that reference. Where did you get the entry for
Agnes McDonald  and James Lanigan from?

Hi,
Daughter Catherine age 10 in 1851  - her mother's maiden name was DRYDEN, from the GRO site

MACDONALD, CATHERINE        DRYDEN
GRO Reference: 1840  J Quarter in DURHAM AND LANCHESTER  Volume 24  Page 86

I think the birthplace from 1851  is meant to be Birtley which is in Chester-le-Street district.

Durham records online index has a baptism in Chester-le-Street district of Catherine Bridget MCDonald parents Peter & Catherine in 1840 but you would need credits to get further details.

In 1861 John Thomas McDonald 27 born Scotland may be the one living in Wellington St, Middlesbrough with wife Maria 23 and son John Thomas 3 ref RG09/3685/100 p27 - page 28 has Maria P daughter age 1 and visitor Catherine 21 born Durham

In 1841 there is conflicting evidence regarding birthplaces, but the order of children is correct - all children down as born Co.Durham -familysearch.org transcript

Marriage found on FindMyPast, tried to attach a snip of the GRO handwritten index, but Attachments link doesn't seem to be working..... just goes to the Options element not the attach.

Burial on Durham Records Online for Catherine McDonald in 1855 at Lanchester, "of Leadgate", born c1801.
