The ASKE family of Howden/Bubwith/Aughton, East Yorkshire
« on: Tuesday 21 February 17 19:09 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm after any leads/info about an Anne Aske who married John Towley in 1625 in Bubwith.  I know the Aske family were prominent and a family of nobility but I cannot for the life of me find the connections to which Aske branch she belongs.

There is an Anne Aske baptised in Bubwith 1601 and I think this is the wife of John Towley/Towlie of Howden.

Can anyone help?  There is a solid concentration of Askes in this small region centred around Aughton and their castle.

Thanks,
Andy

I have no direct information, but the name Aske and the fact that you are having difficulty in tracing the descent strongly suggests to me that the ancestor is Robert Aske who was executed for his part in the Pilgrimage of Grace in the late 1530s. I suggest you have a look in the books on the Pilgrimage of which there are several. Also, Lincolnshire archives have the complete records of the reign of Henry VIII a series of records from his reign published in the late 19th century, and as they are written in the 16th century syntax I found very difficult, but they may contain the record you need.

The index to "Wills in the York Registry 1627-1636" lists the following:

7 May 1636, Aske, Robert, Harlethorpe par. Bubwith, fol 39

The father of Anne baptised 1601 was also named Robert so he could be a father or brother, although unfortunately I have no idea where you might locate the actual will.
