Is Wesleyan a religion

Help!! Have found a possible ancestor but on the IGI is states Michael St-Wesleyan Whitehaven. Is this a place or a religion? Cass

I've just done a lookup for someone and the occupation for 1 of the household members was : Wesleyan Minister.

Michael Street Wesleyan would have been (possibly still is) a Wesleyan Chapel.

Wesley was a fire brand evangelical preacher and hymn writer, originally itinerant but founding chapels as he went along. Wesleyan's have close links with Methodism and indeed most towns where both flourished now have a combined Wesley Methodist Church/Chapel

Many thanks Caz and Keith. I don't think that this is my ancestor as none of the other children have Wesleyan at their christening. All the others are baptised at the Holy Trinity Whitehaven which I think is ?CofE Cass

As I said Wesley was an evangelical preacher and many left the Established Church 'cos his brand of religion was more exciting. Did the CofE baptisms precede the Wesleyan?

Why don't you post all the details you have on the ancestor you're looking for, it'll be much easier to find him/her that way

Name, age, place of birth
Parents' names, ages, places of birth
What documentaiton do you have ?
Census Returns, Certificates etc. etc.
