Need help finding minister at Bolton Le Moors 1720
« on: Wednesday 27 July 05 08:06 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have an extract from a letter written in 1740 from a John Lomax to his son Jacob. Part of it says:

'You was born 14 day of March, 1720, baptised by Mr. Seddon...'

There is a IGI entry for a Jas Lomax, b. 15-3-1720 at St Peter's Church, Bolton Le Moors, Lancashire. I know that Jas doesn't stand for Jacob, but one can never be sure.

If I knew that there was a Mr Seddon ministering at the church in 1720 I would be able to prove / disprove this IGI entry.

It is very important for me to find this out as it will confirm or rule out a whole stack of other research that has been done on the Lomax family.

Does anybody know how I might find out whether Mr. Seddon was ministering at the church?

Regards,
Adam

Usually there is a list of vicars on the wall in the church.   Perhaps someone could go and look for you?    Otherwise try to see the original parish records - his signature will be on them.  Contact the local record office.  I am sure they would look for you.

Thanks Andrea,

Unfortunately, I believe the church was rebuilt in about 1838. A shame, because I live close enough to make a visit. Maybe even after the rebuild they listed all the old vicars on the wall - worth looking in to.

I'm just off to my local FHS. I think I'll order a copy of the original parish records.

Thanks again,
Adam

hi

this information probably won't help, but a forebearer of mine was a dissenting minister.  Peter Seddon b. 1689 - d.1731 was a minister first at Penrith Cumberland 1717-1719, and then at Cockey Moor, Middleton Lancs until his death.  I have no record of his wife, but what is interesting is there is an historical record of his son, John, being born 1719 (I have seen it recorded for 1716) at Lomax Fold, Little Lever, Bolton Lancs.  I have wondered if there was a connection with the Lomax family.  I have been unable to trace any parish records for his birth.  Incidently John also became a minister.
