A brick wall .... as usual!
« on: Friday 10 February 17 06:06 GMT (UK) »
I have drawn a blank regarding the background, and indeed future life, of a Glispin person who appears on the 1900 Fed Census for Spokane, WA.
The entry records a E F Glispin (no full first names) dob July 1868. Father born in England and mother in Illinois. (I guess the state of birth might be Iliinois). The person's occupation is that of a journalist. Perhaps, as a journalist E F was covering a story?
Does anyone have any expertise that is more far reaching than mine, please?
Thank you.

Hi Ohanlon,

This may remove him from your radar but......

The name is enumerated as CLISPIN, not GLISPIN.
The enumerator writes a capital G at least 3 other times on the same page, as well as many other instances of a capital C  - the latter which are the same or similar to the C  in CLISPIN.

1900: Roomer: E F CLISPIN, Male, single, age 31, b July 1868 Illinois.

This looks like him in 1910 - name is CLIPSON:
( His occupation is a bit of a mystery to me)
4231 Ellis Avenue, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois (IL)
Head: Alice JAMIESON 40, widow, b IL
Lodger: Edwin F CLIPSON, white, male, age 41, single, b IL. Fa: b England, Mo: b IL.  Occ:  Promotion (?) at Mines?
Lodger: Charles H CADWALLADER 40, divorced, Liveryman, b IL.s

Twenty years later…..
1930: at 902 Grace Avenue, Chicago, Cook County Illinois
Head: Alice JAMIESON 65, widow, b IL, parents b Indiana & Kentucky (same as 1910)
Nephew: Edwin F CLIPSON 60, single, b IL, parents b IL. Magazine Editor.
Roomer: Charles CADWALLADER 65, single, b Ohio

His middle name is Fletcher - he's under that name in 1920, when he's still with Aunty Alice JAMIESON & Mr CADWALLADER. He applied for an emergency US passport in 1913 whilst in Japan working as a Theatre Manager intending to travel to Russia. Much can be found on Mr E.F. CLIPSON - much of it looks fascinating -  but am restraining myself from posting more, as he's not a GLISPIN  :'(

A positive negative is a also good thing......  ;D

Cheers

Ka pai and whakawhetai koe....!
I am a kiwi also, living on Bribie Island Qld.

My great grandmother was a Glispin/Gleespen/Glespen depending on which official document you are reading. She lived in Whanganui and having married an O'Hanlon immigrated to there and had a very hard existence... harsher than if they remained in Ireland, is my thinking.
I have extensively research (and self published) her connection to her family in the United States.
Our friend "EF" was a recent revelation .... a dead end, it seems.

Kia Ora James, a ko mai koe!

A shame Edwin is not a Glispin, he would have been a fascinating addition to your tree I think. (I meant to add, the Passport application has his dOb as 17 July 1868, further supporting that the 1900 Census is him).

Glispin is a name I've not come across before, so that was interesting too

Best of luck with your continued research, here's to added chapters!
