Was she a widow?
« on: Monday 06 February 17 01:58 GMT (UK) »
I hope someone can help me with a note in a Will I'm currently researching regarding my ancestor Thomas A'Den of Barham.

Thomas died in 1552 and like virtually all other members of his family, he left a Will. In this he mentions his wife Margaret stating:

"I will to Margaret my wife all those parcels that the said Margaret brought to me at the day of our marriage which parcels be written in the inventory of William Naishe"

Later he states that :

"I will that my Executors shall deliver all the bequeaths and legacies that Richard Naishe, John Naishe the two children of Margaret Wraith had to them bequeathed by the last will of William Naishe and not yet paid or delivered to Margaret my wife or her assigns"

I know that Thomas was married to Margaret Naishe but from this I think this may have been a second marriage for her. The Will seems to suggest that Margaret Wraith was married firstly to William Naishe (having two sons) and secondly to Thomas A'Den.

Would that be a correct interpretation? If so then I'll need to stop looking for Naishe ancestors and focus on the name Wraith instead.

Thanks all

Matt

Hi,
I would say yes, that's how it reads to me.
Wraith must have been her maiden name.

Yes I read it the same way she was a widow, maiden name Wraith, who was previously married to William Naishe.  That was the time that when a woman married, all her possessions became the property of her husband, so what a nice man Thomas was, making sure that everything William Naishe had left to his wife and sons was returned to them.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm pleased I was right in my assumption. Hopefully I can now find out some more about her ancestry. Although my first stop will be the Will of William Naishe to see what that tells me.

Hi everyone,
Just wondering Matt if there has been an update on this?  I too am really interested in determining who Agnes's mother was and if Margaret was nee Wraith or Naishe?  Agnes was my ancestor through Valentine her son.  Thanks,
Tamara

Hi Tamara

I haven't got back beyond Margaret yet unfortunately. I believe she was married to a man named William Naishe [or Nasshe] prior to being married to Thomas Denne. William

I have copies of the Wills of both William and Thomas and in his Will, William refers to Thomas as "my friend" and names him as overseer. Also William's children are named in Thomas Denne's Will.

Having looked at the Wills again it looks like William's daughter Margaret was married to someone named Wraith.

If you pm me your email address I will send you copies of the relevant Wills.

I would be interested if you could tell me more about Valentine and Agnes as they do not appear on any records I've looked at and I don't have them on my tree.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Best Wishes
Matt
