SP problems
« on: Friday 20 January 17 16:49 GMT (UK) »
The new SP is driving me crazy. Extremely difficult to find anything easily.
I did manage to find a death cert for 1966 because I had searched it and saved search earlier last year before the image was available. Got the cert no problem at a cost of 6 credits( plus the 1 credit I had already paid for search last year)

I am now looking for the wife of the above who died 5 days before her husband.
I can't understand why they keep telling me it is not available. Never used advance search on original SP and can't see  an ordinary search on this new version. Don't find it user friendly in any way.
Hoping someone can give me some advice.

Thanks Margaret

Hi Margaret,

Yes, the new site takes a bit of getting used to and is not as user friendly as you say.

You can do what used to be an ordinary search - at the left hand side there is the word people in black writing and you just enter your search details along from this. It takes you to all the births, marriages and deaths  for that name and you click on the record you want e.g. deaths and it then brings up the list. Personally I use the advanced search now. Hope you can understand what I mean.

I cannot understand why the death record you want for the lady who died in 1966  is not available. What are the exact words that come up ?

Or if you want to post her details here I will give it a go and see what it tells me.

Thanks Dorrie
I've tried so many combinations on the advanced search and all I get is
"there are no results refine search or start new search"
Tried the search you suggested in various combinations and all I get is "no results"
This is driving me crazy.
Will send details in a private message if that is OK. I'm searching for a friend's parents and not sure if she would want it in an open forum.

Hi Dorrie
Can't thank you enough. Have now got the certificate. My friend will be delighted.
Can't believe how this site has changed and has become so difficult to use.
Such a shame as there is so much wonderful info on it that is now so difficult to access.
Thanks again for your help.
Margaret

Hi Margaret,

That's great - glad to help.

The new SP site gets easier to use as you become familiar with it. Just persevere and you eventually get there.

I've tried so many combinations on the advanced search and all I get is
"there are no results refine search or start new search"
Sometimes the problem can be that you are putting in too many combinations. I always use the absolute minimum - usually surname and year only, and only add a given name if there are too many results using only the surname. Sometimes I use wildcards.

I have yet to decide whether 'fuzzy search' or 'phonetic search' or whatever method works best for me.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
