Yes, I know. Just like region coded American DVDs won't play on UK DVD players, there are thoughts that printer manufacturers are doing the same with their ink cartridges. If people in the UK are stupid enough to pay more for ink than people elsewhere and the market will stand it, the printer manufacturers are going to make money out of it. It's called consumer choice and that was invented by the wicked witch of the west!

Thank you everyone. I have contacted the supplier (luckily I had the receipt) and they said they are putting a replacement in the post first class with a bag to return the faulty cartridge.

That is good news from a reputable supplier.

Just have to wait and see what the printer says to the replacement!

To update those of you who were kind enough to offer ideas and solutions, the replacement ink cartridge arrived as promised and the printer accepted it.

I didn't realise before that some cartridges could be faulty and I recommend the suuplier for their prompt response : Premier ink. ( I hope I'm allowed to do that?)

Very pleased it's sorted, Primorse. I've never had any problems with genuine cartridges - and only one eg of prob with compatibles.

It's also nice to know of reliable suppliers  :)

I feel your pain!

It's an issue that occurs occasionally with my HP printer too - I like to use recycled, remanufactured cartridges which work fine for 95% of the time - then out of the blue it refuses to work when I have to replace one and I get a message along the lines of "replacement cartridge not a genuine HP cartridge".

I think that it's to do with automatic updating of printer drivers which somehow installs the demand for HP-only cartridges.

I've tried to remove all auto updating from the printer, not sure if I've achieved it but fingers crossed, no problems recently.

I also have an Epson which occasionally doesnt want to accept a "compatible" ink. Most times I find that by checking the underside of the ink cartridge that the plastic strip has been put on by the supplier slightly offline. By unsticking it and sticking it back on in the right place - compare with the one you have taken out - this often cures the problem.  ;)

;) that's a useful tip worth remembering. It's amazing how fussy these machines are.

My local supplier of replacement compatible ink cartidges told me recently that printer manufacturers have been building into their more recent models a facility that rejects anything other than their genuine replacement parts.  They also include reinforcement of the rejection into any updates they issue for drivers and such like.  Sadly he is in process of closing down the business because there are fewer and fewer people with older printers that can accept compatibles & there just isn't enough business in the originals to keep him afloat.

I've stocked up with several sets of inks, but goodness knows whether I shall be able to get even the real thing when they've all gone.  I have an ancient - but still very much in full working order - Canon, that gives me beautiful prints, copies, photos and scans with no trouble at all.

So much for progress  - never forget that manufacturers are only interested in their profits - sod how that affects the consumers.

It really grieves me to throw away perfectly good equipment - any equipment, that is, not just computers/peripherals.
