McCullough brothers of Garvaghy, Co. Down, Ire.
« on: Thursday 12 January 17 17:26 GMT (UK) »
Samuel McCullough - born on 27 Nov 1894 Tullinisky/Garvaghy/Down, Ireland to Samuel McCullough & Margaret Anne Malcomson.
Baptised on 24 Sept 1895 in Garvaghy Presbyterian Church, Ire.
Shown age 6 in 1901 Census, Tullinisky, Garvaghy, Down, but no record of him with the family in the 1911 Census, Fedany/Fedney, Garvaghy, Down.
The only other record I can find for him is his ATTESTATION PAPER - Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Force, No. 148170, dated Aug 1915, Birtle, Man. (Manitoba ?.
Mrs. S McCullough of Fedney Banbridge, Ireland recorded as next of kin and that he belonged to the 100th Winnipeg Grenadiers.
Any information on him would be most welcome to help fill in the blanks between 1901 and 1915
and whether or not he fought in Europe and survived.
Samuel also had a brother William Thomas (born 6 Nov 1897) who is recorded with the family in the 1901 & 1911 Census, and then on 28 Apr 1923 arriving at Quebec on-board SS Regina, destination Forest, Ontario.
Any help with the above would be much appreciated.

McCulloughs were Presbyterian according to 1901 census-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Gaevaghy/Tullynisky/1205462

Listed on Garvaghy Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour- also W. T. (William Thomas):
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~econnolly/rohpci/rohgarvaghy.html

Not in 1911 census with rest of family as you said-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Garvaghy/Fedany/214080
However, if you look at the image it seems as though the line he should be listed on was left blank-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002165230/
So, it;'s possible he was living at home in 1911, wasn't listed because he was away from home on census night and missed being enumerator wherever he did stay.

School registers might be in PRONI- not sure where the boys would have gone (not always nearest school)- if they are enrolled then there should be a leaving date or transfer of school recorded-

Samuel isn't listed in CWGC database so it's likely he survived.

Possibilities-

20 July 1913 'Athenia' arrived Quebec from Glasgow: Samuel McCullough, 19, single, farm labourer (since 1907), going to Winnipeg (British Bonus Allowed)

1921 Census- Brandon, Manitoba (in household of James Forbes)
servant Samuel McCullough, 27, single, born Ireland, farmer, to Canada 1918
