Record of Robert Hamilton Brown
« on: Thursday 12 January 17 15:58 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am looking for the military records of a relative of mine:
Robert Hamilton Brown, born c1858 Londonderry, N.Ireland
Enlisted in 1915. I believe the address then to be 10 Walton Villas, Lverpool

Can anyone help me locate this history?
Thanks very much,
Kipper

He does not appear to have used his full name;  and I cannot find a Robert (H) Brown that matches. You might be better off looking in the 1918/19 electoral roll for that address. It may give a regiment and/or number.

There is a Rbt H Brown in the 25th Battalion Liverpool Regt. But he was discharged in 1918 and it gives his age as 23.

Two thirds of records were destroyed in WW2:

Your man would have been 57 in 1915 - are you sure he served?

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

Robert did serve in the First World War, in the a.o.c.  We have his medals. He did survive , but then seems to disappear.

Don't know if this helps, but it shows another connection between the browns and wylies. My g.grandfather (the elusive robert Hamilton brown) lists on his WW1 soldier's record in 1915 as his address being 10 Walton Villas in liverpool. Which is where Alex's grandparents lived? Don't know why he didn't sign up in Derry.

Hello A Brown,
Do you happen to have details of Robert H Brown's soldier's record?? If we had a reference of some kind we could see what he did in WW1.
You previously said that you knew that his record stated that he was in Walton Villas in Liverpool in 1915. As he was born in 1858 he would have been 57 in 1915..
Thanks,
Kipper.

Did you ever get further information from them, Kipper?

There is a note on the medal roll that he died 18.10.18. His medal - according to this list he only earned the British War Medal, not the Victory - was returned to the Medal Office. So when you say medals (plural), what do you have?

He was a Warrant Officer Class II, equivalent to a Sergeant Major, number A820.

Getting to WOII in three years may mean pre WW1 experience. Do you have details of his parents and siblings?

Ken

The link only works if you have an Ancestry subscription but there's lots of family details in the Derry thread (link posted earlier).

On this and the other (bewildering) thread, there are words to the effect that "the address on his records is Walton Villas Liverpool" and an elistment date of 1915.  The only records that appear for the AOC man are the medal roll and card which Ken has referenced.  Neither of those have an address or enlistment date on them so what is the record that has the address on them and what other details are there on that record?

This is essentially the same query as Aghadowey poses (citing reply 57) but for the life of me I can't work out who first said they had a copy of the record!!  Whoever that was has the key to this.

The "e" at the end of Brown/Browne seems to come and go.
