I just did some research on Modern Woodmen and it was a mutual life insurance company. I know their emblem is on the Cappell marker in Elm Lawn cemetery.

manawakian I thought Sandra was able to discount the above with the following info

Searched those records earlier - not convinced that this is the correct John - tried following John Cappell born 1836 New York from the 1850 census District 2, Campbell, Kentucky - which led me to John E. Death of Eliza Cappell found here

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-677H-Y6?mode=g&i=3218&cc=1307272

Note parents and informant half-brother John Caster

The 1879 death of Elisha Cappell in Clermont County Ohio found by Sandra is very likely the right Elisha since Campbell County Kentucky is a neighboring county across the Ohio River.

I have certainly been wrong before but manawakian's discovery  doesn't look to be the right family.

I  had wondered if John and Eliza had been married in Canada especially as her family was living there.

I had a ancestor who was living in US and went home to Canada to be married many years ago.

They also could have possibly been married at a neighbouring county in Michigan.

Many things seem to be throwing us off the trail for John Cappell.

Lilybell I agree - Eliza's brother, Albert, came to Michigan from Canada and then went with Eliza's sons ex wife (from Detroit, Michigan) to get married in Canada in 1908 and then they came back to Michigan. Perhaps because Albert only had his first papers. In the 1910 census Albert states "Pa" (meaning first papers) under Naturalized or Alien and immigrated in 1898, however, in the 1920 census Albert states that he was Naturalized in 1893 and immigrated in 1889 - he may have just mixed his dates up.

John Cappell's death cert says his father was Elisha Cappell, uncommon given & surnames, so probably accurate.  The Elisha Cappell found in Kentucky is the only one found with a son John so far.  A tenuous connection to be sure, but not entirely eliminated from further consideration.
