Linking Ancestry to MacKiev FTM
« on: Friday 06 January 17 18:15 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone reassure me please?  I'm getting hung up here as I have many years research on Ancestry which I now have to transfer from the Old FTM to MacKiev's version.  In order to do this I have to cut the link to the old FTM first.  If you have a look at Ancestry's website it gives a very firm warning that once you gave untied your tree it can not be reattached.  I'm getting in a state ere as it seems like I'm deliberately marooning myself on a dessert island if things go wrong!

Has anyone any experience of doing this, either positive or negative.  At the moment I haven't been too impressed with MacKiev FTM.

I haven't noticed any difference between when Ancestry supported FTM and now that MacKiev support it. Mine just switched automatically. Do you have a tree on Ancestry or just on FTM?

I must admit I was worried about that warning on Ancestry when I saw it a few years ago, so tested it out using a small tree - I unattached it and then reattached it without any problems, I think someone on here assured me it was possible.

Make sure that you back everything up as a Gedcom before you do anything.

Is it the FTM14 update?   I had an email from MacKiev a few days ago which states "Do NOT unlink your tree! If you have a linked tree on Ancestry.co.uk, the link will magically move to the new build when you install it"

Under "Technical Support" they say:

Knowledge Base. We have hundreds of helpful articles posted on our support site on a variety of topics that will be of interest to all users, and can help solve problems. To get to the knowledge base, just go to support.familytreemaker.com.

Support Requests. If you don't find what you need in the Knowledge Base articles (at support.familytreemaker.com) just click the link for “additional support” at the bottom of the page and you will see the Technical Support request form. Typically we'll be getting back to you by email in 2 days or less.

Live Chat. When you file a Support Request (see above) between the hours of 7am and 10pm GMT (7 days a week), you will have an option to have a live chat with an experienced support agent. This can be very helpful for urgent issues or those that would be easier as a discussion than an email exchange.

You do not unlink the tree as the poster says above. They clearly say just update it 'as is'. I updated it without unlinking and it worked perfect. Much faster now.

I must say that the transition was very easy.......... although it did worry me that I might be entering an unknown area being a dinosaur and very low tech...
