Thanks Trish. Just had an exciting breakthrough today. Still can't find Thomas' baptism but I have found a last will and testament in which he leaves contents of house etc to sister Martha plus an annuity, Brewery equipment and premises to nephew Samuel and all his land in Prees to brother Samuel. Still trying to decipher the rest of it but that's how Samuel changed from a Shoemaker to a farmer of 35 acres. Wouold love to know more about Joseph and Mary now as where did he get all this from?

Can I join the conversation about John Hopwood (b 1798 Prees) and Thomas Hopwood (b1793 Shropshire)?

I have both in my tree as the sons of Joseph Hopwood (1752-1823) of Weston Under Redcastle and Mary Broughall (1770 – 1849).

Thomas (1793-1852)
Samuel (1974-1869)
Martha (1795-1872)
John (1798 – 1835)
Joseph (1799-1821)
Jane (1803-1859).

My interest is Jane Hopwood, who marries Thomas Draycott in 1828.  They were both from Prees Shropshire and Thomas was a butcher.  But in the 1841 census the Draycott family, along with Jane’s widowed mother Mary Hopwood, and Jane’s sister Martha Hopwood, are in Standish Wigan.  Thomas is shown as the inn keeper of the Black Bull Inn.  So my lockdown project has been to find out why Thomas Draycott moved from Shropshire to Standish.  We know the family were at Standish on 16 April 1837 when his son John Draycott was baptised at Standish.

I had no joy with Thomas Draycott, so I looked at the Black Bull In itself.  The inn keeper at the Black Bull before Thomas Draycott was John Hopwood.  He died in 1835 aged 37 years in Standish.    I have a copy of John Hopwood's will papers and they list “Mary Hopwood, the mother, Thomas Hopwood, Samuel Hopwood. Martha Hopwood, Jane Draycott late Jane Hopwood Spinster, the brothers and sisters of John Hopwood late of Standish in the County aforesaid, publican deceased”.  So I am not sure that the John Hopwood in the 1851 census is the son of Joseph Hopwood and Mary Broughall.

On Thomas Hopwood and Martha Hopwood, Thomas Moulsdale lodged with them in Prescot (see the 1841 and 1851 census with Thomas Hopwood).  Thomas Moulsdale died in 1851 and left bequests to both Thomas and Martha.  Thomas Moulsdale’s will is on Ancestry.

Martha Hopwood died 1872 and also left a will, which is on FindMyPast in which she left bequests to a number of family members.

Hope this helps.

After reading the latest post re John Hopwood who died in Wolverhampton, 1867, I think we can definitely rule out Joseph and Mary Broughall as his parents as their son John died in 1835 as stated above, and all the sibling info matches. The burial info at Merridale cemetary states "HOPWOOD John, 66years, 24 Mar 1867, Monmore Green St.Matthew Labourer 7558 G2/05795. This ties in with his address and his occupation as Furnace labourer. So back to drawing board for me, I'm afraid!!
Best wishes to all.

Thank you for the link.  I’ve been looking again at Joseph Hopwood (1752 – 1823) who married Mary Broughall.  I’m not convinced now that he is the son of Peter and Rebecca Hopwood of Weston Under Redcastle.  Unfortunately there are two Joseph Hopwoods baptised in 1752 and buried 1822/23.  One is the son of Peter and Rebecca of Weston Under Redcastle baptised 31 May 1752.  And I think it is likely that he is the one buried at St Luke’s in Weston Under Redcastle on 9 December 1822 aged 70 years (labourer).  The other Joseph Hopwood died on 10 Jan 1823 aged 71 and is buried at Prees with wife Mary and children.  There is a baptism for Joseph Hopwood on 26 June 1752, the son of Richard and Amey Hopwood of Whitchurch, and I think this Joseph is the one buried at Prees.  Richard (1719-1802) is the brother of Peter Hopwood (see link above).
