Totally Stuck! Emmanuel Jowett, West Ardsley, d. 1783.
« on: Tuesday 27 December 16 10:41 GMT (UK) »
Reached a complete dead-end, can anyone help with his birth (c. 1730-1750), somewhere in Yorkshire?

He was a coal miner and was married to a widow, Hannah Clayton, in 1755 at St. Mary's Woodkirk.  They had two children, John and Rachel, before his death in 1783.

Possible fathers name John Jowett.

Hope somebody can help please!

DJNicholson.

The marriage appears to have taken place on the 16th of December 1777. No indication to ages or parentage.

Thanks for the information.

I was confusing this marriage with Hannah's previous one in 1775! Should have checked :-[ !!!!

Still no wiser about his birth/baptism although I did find a Jowett baptism at Thornton by Bradford in Oct 1737 with John Jowett as the father but no christian name for the male infant. Does that mean anything to anyone?

Thanks,

DJNicholson.

"Jowett" and "Bradford" suggest cars to me ... could it become the "Car making family"? By looking them up, and searching backwards, you may find a link that could help you....?
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

Hello

According to the Bradford Historical & Antiquarian Society ...
http://www.bradfordhistorical.org.uk/canal.html

some Jowetts were Quakers (Society of Friends)?

"John Hustler was probably the one man whose influence changed Bradford from a village to a large city. A city which was to become the world centre of the wool textile industry. He was born in 1715. His parents were the Quakers William and Jane Jowett (a relation of Nathan Jowett, the previous signatory) of Apple Tree Farm, Low Fold, Bolton."

Some online companies have mainly used the Quaker RG 6 records (at TNA, Kew) which leaves 50 to 60 year gaps up to 1837, rather than the more extensive Quaker records in record offices. See ...

Check the online coverage for the specific Quaker (Meeting) place.

The Friends House Library, might advise where their records are deposited ...

EDIT: Apparently there are supposed to be Quaker 'Digests', being an index to their Registers?
