Bigg family Newton Longville
« on: Monday 26 December 16 06:23 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find Harriet Bigg who married John Silk by licence at Newton Longville 18 Feb 1817, he having procured the licence on 11 Feb. He was a solicitor from Liverpool and she was from Newton Longville. The original  licence is held at the archives search room at D/A/M/S/484 and I was hoping that it might provide some clue to her background. It might also provide the answer to whether John had had a previous marriage if he is described as a widower.

I have tried to find an entry for her baptism but with no luck. According to her emigration record she was 36 which would mean a birth year around 1797.

Harriet had two daughters with John. However John died in Jan 1833 and Harriet with her daughters was apparently left in poor circumstances. They emigrated to Australia arriving in Dec 1833.

Sorry I cant help with the License.

Just some entries from St Faith, Newton Longville;

Marriages;
31 Jan 1816, Sarah BIGG (s) to Jos CHILTON
1817 one you have of Harriett/Jno is there also.

Joseph/Sarah Chilton Bapt 2 Children, ROBT HENRY 1816/SARAH 1819, Father a Farmer.

Unfortunately on Joseph/Sarah Jnr are in NL in 1841 Census so I cant find a pob/dob for Sarah nee Bigg(s)

Burials;
JNO Bigg(s), 12 July 1809 (birth c 1794)
ROBT Bigg(s), 9 Feb 1813 age 68 (birth c 1745/6)

All on FreeREG, they may be useful in the future.

It is possible Sarah/Jno (Jno) are Siblings of Harriett.

It may be better if your topic heading was changed to show that you are after a licence look up at archives.

From the Centre for Buckinghshire Studies - Marriage Bonds list,(available for free Excel download), the bond gives all the information that you have.
There is no mention of John Silk being widowed, even though a few others on the list are widowed.

BucksFHS may be able to help with a baptism search for Harriet, for a small fee.
