I'll leave the dating to the experts, but...what a superb photograph.

Thanks Japeflakes.

Any ideas as to when it might have been taken?

The photo has an Edwardian feel to it, so around 1900-1910, but if you have the original photo and it has a photographers name on it, I'll be able to give a more exact date.

Mochen: Dimaro-Italy, New Zealand, Western Australia
Patzel/Neugerbauer/Vorwerk: Poland, South Australia
Wheatley: Barcombe-Sussex, South Australia, Western Australia

Ferguson/Laing/MacDonald/MacVicar: North Uist, Scotland

Unfortunately, the photo is not mounted though has traces of cardboard on the back, so was either mounted or taken from an album. I suspect this was given to my great grandfather when he visited Australia some time in the 30s or 40s, but do not know for sure. On the back it says Samuel Crush, standing, father of Walter Smith, and brother. If it is Samuel Crush, he was born in 1856. The man I guess does look like he could be in hos 40s. We have no idea what happened to him. My great great grandmother fled from him to NZ when my great grandfather was still a young boy.
