1841/1851 census LAWLEY Union Passage, Bath
« on: Monday 25 July 05 15:36 BST (UK) »
I would be grateful for an 1841 census lookup in Bath for the households of the following (taken from an 1842 trade directory):

Charlotte LAWLEY 9 Union Passage (milliner)
Feydo LAWLEY 7 Union Passage (watch and clockmaker)
Joseph LAWLEY 8 Union Passage (trunk and clockmaker)

Feydo and Joseph were still at those addresses in an 1846 trade directory, so an 1851 census lookup would also be useful (though only Joseph appears in an 1852 trade directory, at 7 Union Passage, and m,y main interest is in Feydo (Theodore?)).

with thanks
Sheila

Have found Feydo as Theodore born Germany Watch and Clockmaker in 1861 and 71 - do you already have him then? Say if not and I'll post details.

Thanks Debbie and Jan for the lookups.  I was hoping, in some ways, that this would rule Feydo out as being my Theodore Lawley (the one in the 1861 & 1871 censuses that I do already have - thanks all the same, Jan), but the age and place of birth (Germany) are pretty much correct, which leaves me stuck.

There are 6(!) German-born clock/watchmaker LAWLEYs in England in the 1861 census, 4 of whom have distinct ties to Bristol/Bath/Taunton.  The other two - Bernard and Theodore are in London.  Theodore is in a Manchester trade directory under the heading of Clock Makers - German and Dutch in 1828/9 (and his wife was born in Manchester), he christened two daughters in Carlise in the 1830s and a son in Newington, London in 1838.  In the 1861 census, there is another son born in Southwark c 1843.  This makes me think that Feydo in Bath in 1841 and Theodore in London in 1838 and 1843 are not the same person , but Joseph Lawley in Bath had a son christened Joseph Thedore Jerome Lawley in1834 so I expect he was named for Feydo.  Would love to be able to tie them all together!

Thanks again
Sheila
