We mostly saw the connections to those who survived the sinking of the Lancastria. Most events of the war were sad and caused grief to many families. That's probably a good enough reason for them to be explained, so as to avoid such events in future.

My mum was at school with someone who lost their father on the Lancastria, so it was no secret at the time. She was also told that my grandma had, at the last minute, turned down the chance of sending her and my aunt to Canada on the City of Benares.

Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Perhaps they had looked at familysearch and knew he was born on 1 January 1790 and baptised on 24 January 1790.

That wouldn't make him 15 in 1841.

No and as far as I know no one said he was. The 1841 census that was shown said he was 50 which he near enough was at the time.

I think you are perhaps getting confused with his army enrollment c1806 when he said he was 17 but was 15(ish)
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Sorry, David - I apologise, you are right.  :-[  What a shame they didn't say where they did actually get the date from.

No problem. the programme zips along at times and its easy to mistake dates at times because of this (done it myself at times).

I enjoyed the genealogy but found Amanda a bit OTT

I enjoyed the show and thought it was a good episode to follow Danny's. However, there was very little research done by Amanda and the 1841 Census part did have me a bit annoyed (like a few people on here). It was nice to see her interested in her family past but did seem a bit rushed to go straight back to Collin Thomas and the French connection. A decent episode though!  :)

I suppose the problem is that, as people who are interested in genealogy, we are used to working back gradually, generation by generation looking at each person. We know from experience that most led ordinary lives, of no interest to anyone apart from the immediate family. That would make for a very boring television programme, so the producers just settle on the one or two people in the tree who have led an exciting life.

Danny Dyer (who? I don't watch Eastenders) and Amanda Holden - first two episodes in what looks like an interesting series!  I'm pleased to see deliberate traction back up though the generations, rather than the last few series where quite often the focus was on just one individual or a particular situation.

I'm glad Amanda Holden was able to make contact with her father's side of the family - let's hope it might heal a family rift if she keeps up with them!
