William ballard
« on: Monday 28 November 16 18:41 GMT (UK) »
Hello
My gr gr gr grandfather was william ballard born ireland circa 1816. Married to jane dawson from jersey. Hav heard talk that he was a romany. I think because he was a tinsmith. I would like to know more. Anyhow ballard is an english name and william prob descende fro english settlers in ireland from time of cromwell. I hav read that one quarter of population of ireland by 1802 was of english and Scottish blood. Just because he was a tinsmith surely doesnt mean he was a gypsy or romany????

I can see them in 1841 living in Jordan Street Liverpool, William the father's occupation on the original image was Tinman. They were all born in Ireland, William, Ann, Margaret, Richard, Robert, Catherine and Letitia here's a transcript:-

I think this is the William who was married to Jane from Jersey. On the original image it might say Tin Plate Worker:-

1871

Were they Protestants? Looking at the Irish Census for 1901 most Ballards were Protestants living in the north. Looking at the surname on "Irish Ancestors" for the 19th century they are mainly located in the cities ie Cork, Belfast, Dublin and Limerick:-

It's always difficult researching Irish people that far back as there's not many records available.
