Carrick Family, Haltwhistle/Melkridge

Hi All,

I'm looking to bulk out the information I have on the Carrick branch of my family.

My 4xg.grandfather was Francis Carrick, b. 1813. I know a fair bit about him and his family, who moved to Gateshead and I believe were involved in quarrying. I am looking for information regarding his siblings (John b.1797, Robert b.1800 and Christopher b.1803. I believe there may have been more children as there is a 10 year gap between Christopher and Francis) and parents (Robert Carrick and Hannah Graham).

Family legend suggests that there may be a link with the "real" Meg Merrilies (although how true that is, I'm not sure. It's a tale my great aunt was told by her great aunt!)

Re the opening post. I did not find any extra children but did find that when Christopher was baptised in 1803 his father's occupation had changed to schoolmaster. So two possibilities here spring to mind. First whilst he was a schoolmaster did he move away and so any new children were baptised elsewhere, possibly in parishes not on line. Secondly perhaps Hannah had a series of stillbirths / miscarriages and so this accounts for the gap in the births registered

Also a possible earlier marriage for Robert, married Lillias Shield 11 April 1795, she then dies 31 May 1795. They had a son Robert buried on 21 May 1795

Radcliff, I'll take a look at the inheritance database. As for the information re Christopher Carrick, I think the one you mentioned is a different family as I recently found an article in the British Newspaper Archives that mentioned a Frank Carrick being the chief mourner at the funeral of his brother, Christopher Carrick, who was the schoolmaster at Stannington for a number of years.

davidft, I also found the mention of Robert being a schoolmaster on Christopher's baptism. Quite unusual as he is a farmer on the others. I thought it may be a mistake, but who knows. The thing which makes the Carrick's complicated is that all the families seem to use similar names (I'm guessing that as I go further back I'll find that they're all related one way or another!).

I have potentially found mention of two more children born in "the gap" between Christopher in 1803 and Francis in 1813. The article I mentioned above regarding the funeral of Christopher Carrick mentioned his nephews as being amongst the mourners. Two of these are the sons of Francis (Frank) Carrick, whilst Isaac Carrick and Robert Graham were a bit of a mystery. A bit of digging found that an Elizabeth Carrick married a Thomas Graham in Haltwhistle in 1826 and they had a son called Robert in 1828. Isaac Carrick was quite an unusual name and I came across an Isaac who was the son of a William Carrick and Mary who was born at Prudhoe in 1840. Just need to find a bit more out about William and Elizabeth now!!

Hi there. I'm researching the carricks. I've seen many of the names your mentioning in my search, however I have not linked the carricks of haltwhistle to my lot. I have a William carrick who married a Mary, I've ordered their marriage certificate but am new to ordering things and probably need to order more certs, one of their children also Mary married William Hogg, Mary died young and William ended up bringing the kids to new Zealand.

I'm trying to find a connection between the carricks and bright which is a middle name they gave a couple of the kids.

Sorry it's taken so long to reply Blueeyedcollies. I've had a quick look at my tree and can't see a connection with your William Carrick. Have you managed to find any information about his parents or siblings? It's possible he is related to the Carrick's in my tree somewhere along the line, although there are quite a few Carrick's in the northeast of England! I'm happy to help if I can, just let me know
