Looking at the Henry Axon, Sarah E Axon (Vernon) marriage 1902 and Johns birth record

Incoming passenger lists have the following, the address is relevant as Gladys and John were living there at the outbreak of war.

Date of Arrival 30th Jan 1948 Southampton from New York

John Axon  35     9, Garden Street, Newton Hyde, Cheshire   SEAMAN

Gladys seems to have married again in 1968 .

I'm a little confused, If he was Merchant Navy his records won't be with the MOD. You can get a quote from the National Archives for a copy of his Seaman's pouch as given in Cath151's post.
