South Africa - George MOSS
« on: Monday 25 July 05 10:00 BST (UK) »
Hello guys

I have all but come to a brickwall on my Great Grandfather George MOSS.  I'm trying to find out who his parents were.

He fought in the 1st world war for the 1st SA infantry.  He eventually came over to the UK and married my Great Gran Mabel BAXTER.

I have applied for his birth certificate from SA Consulate in London but that has been 7 months now.  The details I have for him are very sketchy and I need a birth date.  There is a lady in SA helping me but they won't search for her unless I give a good date.

Where would I find his Immigration record to the UK?  It might have some details on it.  The only details I have are George MOSS b 1893 East London, Eastern Province, SA.

I also have all his war papers including his brothers war papers, but these do not give a birth date only a year.  It gives his next of Kin as brother John Jack Moss 30 Tennyson St, East London.

On the marriage certificate his Father is called Jack John ( Deceased) Occ Police Sergent.

I'm quite stuck now and running out of ideas.

Thanks

Paul

Their was no immigration  record to the UK. People just hot on a ship and landed in the UK as South Africa was a british colony then. You can check census records to guide you.

Did he remain in the UK?  If he was alive in 1939 you can check that register for his birth date.

Registration of births only started 1895 in South Africa. Prior to that everone used a baptism certificate to prove date of birth.
