I'm a bit late with this one, but I am a British citizen, I lived in Tanzania between 2010 and 2015.
I married in Tanzania in 2012 and to even get a copy of my own marriage certificate in 2012, where I KNEW I had paid for one and done things legally was next to impossible, my daughter was born there in 2013 and also getting her birth certificate was very difficult.
Tanzanians as a rule at that point didn't register births or marriages, instead going down more tribal options as they are free...
A birth certificate at the time cost 2500/=, monthly salary for an average home in Arusha is 20000/=

We must not forget that it was German East Africa before the British took it from them. Goodness only knows what sort of records they kept.

My Grandfather was a Private in the same Regiment as Selous) Was he with Selous at the time of Selous death in what is now Tanzania? We the later generation never asked.
