LAWSON in Durham
« on: Monday 26 July 04 18:35 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for anything on Lawsons living in or around Jarrow.
I have Joseph Dodds LAWSON b. 25th June 1857 in Ravensworth.
He married Kate S. WAUGH (born in Hebburn) in 1887 in South Shields.
Their children were Joseph Stuart LAWSON b.c.1887 in Jarrow. He was my grandfather. He was a soldier in WW1 and was at St Thomas' hospital in London where he met and married Kate E. KNIGHT. They settled in South London/ surrey.
The other child was Charles LAWSON, he was born in Jarrow c.1891. My dad thinks he might have become a doctor.
I know Joseph Dodds LAWSON's parents names were John LAWSON and Isabella ??? but thats as far back as I have managed so far.
Any help at all will be great.
Thanks Folks

I noticed that no-one has replied to your note of last July.  :'(

It might be a long shot - but seeing 'Lawson' and 'Ravensworth' in the same entry makes me wonder if you've tried doing a 'Google' on 'Jack Lawson' or 'Lord Lawson of Beamish'?

It's just possible you might get a surprise - sir!

Bob Lewis.

Hi Barry Lawson, my grandfather, Joseph Stuart Lawson married my grandmother Kate Elizabeth Knight, they lived in Croydon, they were my fathers parents, they had three sons, my dad was the second. Grand dad died before I was born, Grandma Kate died in her 70's, she was lovely. Where/how do you come into our lives?

Hi Bar,
Well, that makes us cousins!
I've done a bit more research since I posted on here, so I can pass that on if you like.
I met your mum & dad once when I was 8, but I only vaguely remember it.
Did you stay in Croydon? I grew up in Thornton Heath, but now I'm in Cambridge.
Dad has mentioned you and S* and R*, and has some photos too.
Great to hear from you.

Hi Barry,
Thank you for your message, unfortunately some of it was erased by the web site monitor, I need to post a third message before I am entitled to use the Personal Messaging service, or I could give you my email address, if that's allowed......would certainly be easier for us, especially since we will be exchanging photographs.
I had no idea that our grand father was even called Joseph, my parents called him Gerry, they didn't really talk about him much and had I no idea that he was a soldier in the Great War, I knew that they met at St. Thomas hospital, did he fall in love with his nurse?
Was he wounded in action?
Was he an officer?,  if he was then I'm told they are easier to trace in terms of what, where and when.
Are there any photographs of him.?
So many questions, and I knew nothing about our grandma's past. She was a sweetie, gently spoken and fun.
Best wishes, Bar

Hi Bar,
Sorry, I thought I was sending a private message last time, hit the wrong buttons.
I dont know much about grandad, I do have a photo of him in uniform outside St Thomas's.
I paid a professional genealogist to research him, but a lot of records were destroyed,  his amongst them.
I didn't know he was called Gerry! Seen him referred to as Stuart though.
My dad was just a boy when grandad died, so he cant recall much about him, and granny died just before I was born so I didn't get to meet her either.
I have a few photos of them, also some nice portraits of your parents too, that I'll happily send you once we can.
All the best
Barry

Hi Barry,
Hope you are well, it would appear that individually, neither of us has much information, but if we collect it all together we might get somewhere. My friend is very interested in the First World War and if the photo you have of Joseph Stuart is clear and quite close-up he can identify the shoulder/ lapel badges, so it might be possible to at least discover where his regiment saw action and even where Joseph was wounded, if he was in fact wounded in action.
I remember my parents talking about the whole Stuart Lawson tradition for naming the first born son, I got the feeling that there is a whole dynasty, landed gentry etc. apparently the Stuart Lawsons have their own burial ground in Perthshire (?) possibly.
Now that we have messaged each other three times, you can privately send me your email address, it's the living Stuart Lawsons that we need to find.
Take care, and best wishes.
Say hello to my uncle.
Bar.
