Brickwall with Eadie/Addis/Addes family Lanarkshire
« on: Thursday 17 November 16 23:11 GMT (UK) »
I've hit a brickwall with my dad's maternal (Eadie) line.

I got back to my 4x Great grandparents William Addes and Margaret Dickson.

William was born about 1800 in Drygate Lanarkshire. William, a Cotton Hand Loom Weaver, and Margaret were married 23 Oct 1820 in Glasgow. I have them and their children on the 1841 census in Camlachie and the 1851 census at Glasgow College.  William died on 10th May 1855 in High Church Glasgow.  His parents are listed on his death certificate as Joseph Addes, Cotton Weaver, and Agnes Dinwoodie (sp?) His brother John Addes was the informant on his death certificate.

I have been searching for William and John's birth, or their parents marriage or death certificates with no luck.

Our current surname is spelled Eadie but I have traced it back through a few different variations including Addis and Addes.

If anyone can offer any help it would be greatly appreciated!

Eadie/Addis/Addes (Lanarkshire) Stevenson/Steenson (Armagh) McElveny/McIlvany (Antrim) Shennan/Shannon (Ireland) Brotherston (Lanarkshire) Heaney (Ireland) Cadden (Ayrshire) Ewart (Ayrshire/Ireland) McCulloch (Ayrshire) Service (Ayrshire) Wilson (Lanarkshire) Miller (Lanarkshire) Williamson (Ireland) Dow (Stirlingshire) Docherty (Ireland) McCord (Ireland) Gorman (Antrim) Aitken (Lanarkshire) Marshall (Cumbernauld/Kilsyth)

Hi Karen

Sure you know that with the start of official registration in Scotland only from 1855, there may not be any birth or christening entries to be found in the Old Parish Registers for William and John. If parents died pre 1855, again, will likely be hard to find something on them.

I saw in 1841 an entry for a John EDDIS, a weaver age 30 (so born between 1807-11 with the usual rounding down on ages for 1841). He showed in Glasgow St Mungo which I believe is the right area for Drygate.

Have you managed to find details on brother John in later years?

Hi, Karen,

No luck with Eadie etc but one possibility for Agnes Dinwoodie:
Bapt 7 Aug 1774 Kirkmichael, Dumfries to Peter Dinwoodie and Margaret Mitchell. (The name Peter/Patrick doesn’t seem to appear in the family later though, so your Agnes could also be one of the many unrecorded ones.)

There’s a good little article on the history of the Dinwoodies in Electric Scotland:

Cheers,
Peter

This may not be relevant but worth thinking about.

There are a number of  people named Eadie in my tree.
(They came from EK and Cambuslang in early 1800's but there are no Josephs in any line)

However, their original family name seems to be : Adie
