Marriage look up Wigan
« on: Wednesday 16 November 16 18:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Iam hoping that someone maybe able to look up a marriage record for me from Wigan parish registers.
I have the marriage record which is for a Patrick Duffy and a Mary McMahon took place in 1893 which I got from Lancashire bmd
I assume they were married at a register office because I cannot find a church wedding for them on the Lancashire opc site.
What I want to find out is their parents names before I send for their marriage certificate I hope this information would be on parish marriage records.
Iam hoping someone maybe able to check this out for me please.
Many thanks in advance for any help.
John Duffy

If it was a Register Office wedding, or at a non conformist Church, then it wont be in Parish records - they record marriages taking place in Church of England churches.
If you send for the marriage cert, it will tell you where the marriage took place, and will give you the names of the bide and grooms fathers.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

You ask about the marriage of a Patrick Duffy and Mary McMahon in Wigan in 1893.

> What I want to find out is their parents names before I send for their marriage certificate I hope this information would be on parish marriage records.

The LancashireBMD site states for this marriage "Wigan, Register Office or Registrar Attended".  At this time, the law only allowed marriages in non-Anglican chapels (Non-Conformist in the widest sense) provided the Registrar attended for the civil aspects of the ceremony.  The names of the couple seem Irish so it is possible that this marriage took place in a Catholic chapel.  At this time there were four Catholic chapels in Wigan and several more in the Wigan and Leigh Registration District.

The LancashireOPC site is striving to improve its coverage of Catholic registers.  You will find an increasing number from the Diocese of Salford (the old Hundreds of Salford and Blackburn), a few from the Archdiocese of Liverpool (the old Hundreds of West Derby and Leyland) and none from the Diocese of Lancaster (Lancashire north of the Ribble).  St John is the only Catholic chapel in Wigan for which registers have been transcribed and these are only for an earlier period.

lizdb has said that the certificate will provide the details you seek and, sadly, this is probably the best and easiest way of getting those details.  The new GRO service provides a pdf version (copy) of the GRO register entry at a reduced cost for a limited period.

Hope this helps,

Jim Lancaster (Bury, Lancs.)

Do you have them in the 1901 census ?...this should state their place of birth which will give you a start ?

could this be them - Canal Street - sub district Aspull,Standish ,Wigan
Patrick Duffy aged 28 - born Ireland
Mary Duffy aged 28 born Blackrod ,Lancs
Mary aged 1 b Standish

if it is a possible you are looking for Mary McMahon b 1872/73 in Blackrod

there is a Mary McMahon b 1873 Hindley,Wigan - mmn McMahon - Blackrod on Wiki comes under Wigan Poor Law Union
......................................
ADDED
 www.lancashirebmd.org.uk
1898 Rose DUFFY - mothers maiden name McMahon - Standish district STND/34/416
1899 Mary Duffy - ditto ..................................................................STND/35/440
1907 Catherine DUFFY ditto.............................................................STND/41/198

...

1901 Agnes DUFFY - mmn McMahon     Aspull district                           ASPL/56/189
1904 Alice DUFFY - ditto ..................................................................ASPL/59/72

So it looks like 2 Duffy / McMahon families in Wigan - unless they moved from Standish to Aspull then back again
the 1911 census will tell you if they are seperate families or one family

oakes,liverpool..neston..backford..poulton cum spittal(bebington)middlewich,cheshire......   sacht,helgoland  .......merrick,herefordshire adams,shropshire...tipping..ellis..  jones,garston,liverpool..hartley.dunham massey..barker. salford

Garstonite has suggested a possible family in the 1901 Census and states -

> it is a possible you are looking for Mary McMahon b 1872/73 in Blackrod

There was a Catholic chapel in Blackrod between 1870 and 1874.  The registers for this chapel have been deposited in the Lancashire Archives in Preston. As far as I know there are no published transcripts or indexes.

Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Aspull opened in the 1850s.

Lan-OPC has the marriages from 1861 to 1891, the original register being in Lancashire Archives at Preston.

The catalogue mentions a copy register on microfilm MF 1/215 covering 1871 to 1941. This may or may not have what you are looking for.

Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
